There was ways to variate things without ai nor need to playtest.

It works like Minecraft, you get a seed number (the code you can enter in your screenshot, or the one it gets based on the games the cart attaches to), and the map is generated based on that seed value.

They're randomly generated out of pre-made, hand made pieces. Once you've played like 30 or 50 levels, you've seen it all. I should know because I played like a hundred and after a while it's just the same patterns over and over.

Is this ai?

It's called "procedural generation" and has been in some games for a very long time. Dark Cloud (PS2) comes to my mind because I like it.
It's also used for stuff like generating NPCs quickly or creating an overworld map that the devs can then hand-craft on top off.
The whole "is it AI" discussion is meaningless. Modern "AI" isn't what people thought "AI" meant 15 years ago and cannot "think for itself."

Are we getting to this point for any sort of procedural generation being called "AI?"

I mean if you use today's ai to generate a picture of a dungeon map, how is that any different from some old mystery dungeon game generating a random dungeon map?

I want to see a site where everyone can beat every single blue spheres level and it keeps track of which ones have been beaten. Theoretically possible but good luck finding more than a handful of Sonic autists finishing even 1% of all levels.

that is the number of times sonic has gotten blue balls.
