I don't really care if you emulate, but you should at least play games using the proper controllers. Either the original using an adaptor or the NSO wireless versions. Using something like a dualshock, dualsense or Xbox controller to play retro games is retarded. 8bitdo controllers are awful too.

The best genre of games can be played with just a keyboard and a touch screen though

nah. doesnt matter. mister with the wrong controller is better than software emulation with the right controller

Nso controllers suck though, massive amounts of input lag

I play all games with a NES controller. If I need more buttons, I rubber band two together.

You don't get to dictate which controller I can or can't use, even if I do have the proper controller for most of them.

I find that having controllers that are similar is good enough. I use the 8BitDo M30 for anything SEGA before the Dreamcast, as the Game Gear felt sort of Genesis inspired, and the Master System had a Genesis/Saturn like controller in later releases. I also use a DualShock 3 for anything PlayStation, including PSP... and the SNES, as the PlayStation's controller was clearly inspired by it, also use it for NES as the SNES controller was similar to the dogbone, and the SNES controller is the base for anything Sony. I have an arcade stick for arcade emulation, but also anything arcade inspired that would have me use the NES Advantage, for example.

Unironically, you're right.
Using the corresponding controller provides the authentic feeling of experiencing a specific console in its entirety, even if on a emulator. Using the same controller on all consoles gives a homogeneous and wrongfeeling.
Playing a SMS or NES game with their original controllers (or faithful replicas) is a whole different (but authentic) experience.

Don't care, I emulate on a macbook pro and just use its keyboard for everything.
And the touchpad as the mouse for DOS games like Doom.

you should focus on where there are practical benefits first. analog sticks for instance, in that case it can help a lot to go to the trouble of using an adapter, many more variables in that than digital controls.

>I don't really care if you emulate,Some random internet nobody doesn't care if I emulate? Ohh thank god, I was worried for a second there.>but you should at least play games using the proper controllers.Dang, now you got me! Is there anything else I need to do while enjoying games myself that won't upset your delicate sensibilities? I would hate to cause offense to some stranger via the way I choose to enjoy pirated software.

You want the authentic retro experience? Here's my authentic retro experience: my controllers would eventually break, or I'd want another controller for multiplayer, and my parents would buy whatever cheap third party controller they could find. Except for the NES, which was a hand-me-down and came with pic related or something similar, so I never experienced the original pad. Yes, this is how I played SMB1 in the early 90s. This happened until the PS2, when I finally moved to PC. Ironically, I've been using the official DS4 and dualsense ever since.

I'll continue using my wireless 360 controller that I've used for everything for the last 15 years.

I really don't care to be juggling a gorillion different pads for every single console I play. A DS3 covers you for everything Nintendo up to the SNES and GBA, and of course everything Sony, arguably Dreamcast as well. Now, an argument could be made for also keeping a Saturn pad (for Genesis and Saturn of course) as well as N64 and GC pads, since those layouts are sufficiently different that games for those consoles do benefit from using the original controllers. An arcade stick is also nice.

I have been thinking about getting a 3 button genesis pad mainly just for playing sonic 1, 2, 3, and cd on my laptop. Why? Because I like to roll my thumb back and forth across the three jump buttons fast as fuck so I can get a top speed spin dash fast as fuck. My cheap gamesir controller is styled after a ps4 pad and the anal log stick gets in the way of me doing this fast as fuck, not to mention the three jump buttons aren't lined up properly. Would also just make genesis more immersive in a gimmicky way. Anybody got experience with any of the the aftermarket ones? Or should I just get a real one used and an adaptor? My tism demands me take action.

I just do this:
SNES Pad: NES/SNES/GB/GBA
N64 Pad or Hori pad: N64
Saturn Pad: SMS/Genesis/Saturn/PCE
Dualshock 4: PS1
Arcade Stick: anything released in the arcade

I will play with the input method I find most comfortable with the game. If the original is shit (most of them are), I will do my best to improve my experience.

I did by my count and there's nothing you can do about it

I started playing on emulators using a Microsoft SideWinder Dual Strike. It wasn't until my dad eventually got a Logitech F310 I started using that. When I started making my own money I eventually bought the Super Nintendo and SNES USB adapters from retroUSB.I rarely emulate anymore. I prefer playing on original hardware on a CRT with composite cables just how I started playing these games in my childhood. If want to try an expensive game I'll throw the ROM in a flashcart

Nah. I emulate nearly all my games with keyboard and mouse (objectively better for nearly every genre of game btw), unless it's a 3D game that requires a right analog stick for camera controls and there's no mouselook mod for the game, in which case I use a controller.
