Anonymous10/14/26, 07:37No.12877041OK let's decide it once and for all.
The SID was the best of the early '80s home computer sound chips. 2-op FM doesn't cut the mustard. Tone generators are terrible. And many computers and consoles weren't even lucky enough to GET sound hardware and had to click a speaker.

that was a heavily cost reduced version. 4op or more with many more voices makes the sid sound like ass. sid was awesome for 1982 but even the creator of it himself said he didn't have enough time or silicon for more voices or other features. yamaha had infinite money and resources to sink into making high quality synth and dac ICs. anyway, fm synthesis is entirely different from the sid and isn't comparable.>Nordischsound
you really can't help yourself by shilling your youtube channel everywhere. you barely understand how the sid works and you have no idea how fm synth works. awesome. i'm not giving you views, retard. get a fucking job.

No. A child with a youtube induced hot take is not "us". And no one should ever let it be involved in any decision making other than which happy meal it gets.

6581 beats 8580 simply because it played digitized sound better, and the filters were much squelchier and stronger. I fell lucky with mine because the filter wasn't too muffled like some other poor souls got

The YM2413 is massively superior to the SID. The only argument for the SID is that it predates the YM2413 by 4 years.

>There were also some other cost-cutting modifications: the number of waveforms was reduced to two, the additive mode was removed along with the 6-bit carrier volume control (channels instead have 15 levels of volume), and the channels are not mixed using an adder; instead, the chip has a built-in DAC that uses time-division multiplexing to play short segments of each channel in sequence, a practice that would be done with the YM2612 later onIt's cheap garbage. SID wasn't beaten until the OPL3 days. Even then the filters are completely weak and devoid of life, so it's a wash except for the number of concurrent channels.

I mean by Nyquist's theorem, round-robin multiplexing a channel of information among nine inputs will reduce each signal's bandwidth to one-ninth or LESS (depending on ringing, glitch, and other technical problems) and this was all covered long before he was alive by Alexanderson in his theory of telegraphy.I'm a radio ham as well as an amateur musician. Digital and analog modes both. Things like this are important to know and much of it meshes with digital and analog audio.FM is thin and reedy and hollow with 2-op synths that DON'T multiplex their signals. 4-op can sound amazing, but not realistic. 6-op and 8-op are needed for that. I posted a pic of my setup, up there. And despite what the Internet and even the manual says, the EX5 there has 2-op FM as a sub-mode of its FDSP mode. I've experimented with it a lot and it's simply not that great, except with the EX5 you can use any wave in the synth, or even samples which you load, as the operators, they can be of any length as well. If you work at it with long and tonally rich samples, you can achieve some wild sounds. But you can only define one voice with the YM2413, the rest are stock. And that one voice is limited to single-cycle basic waves, a couple samples long. Maybe a dozen. They're in a LUT in the chip with the hard-defined voices.

I'm just glad that nobody has brought up PSGs thus far, which are also inferior to the SID.

love to see it. if only archives and screenshots of this compulsive lying sex offender never existed he might be able to get away with it. 10 years of it lmao - until anons realized >hey it's just one schizo sex offender spamming the site and having conversations with himself
and the lolcow has never recovered. every single day australians and assembly language larpers live and dance freely in his tiny brain broken by meth and mental illness. unable to use /vr/ as a personal blog for schizo losers. glorious work, 4chan's lolcow. you will always be our personal toilet until the website shuts down or you die. whatever comes first.
