How has your taste in adventure games changed over time?
For me, back in the day, I of course did the equivalent of the "top rated rotten tomatoes movies" equivalent for adventure games and I played through all the Lucas Arts classics (Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle) but my first two adventure games ever were actually Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers and then a hilarious "we removed all the cutscenes and all NPC character models" game-rip of Nightlong and maybe Neverhood was the first game I actually finished as a kid without a guide.
Now that my nostalgia faded away, my top 10 is:
1) Day of the Tentacle
2) Jack Orlando: A Cinematic Adventure - unironically a more entertaining comedy than the above and all other Lucas Arts comedy adventure games
3) The Last Express - it's been 15 or more years since I last played but I still remember all the optional missable content that you are rewarded with if you explore the game, it's probably the best designed "limited amount of locations" (due the train setting) adventure game ever made, they managed to get the most out of it
4) Harvester - I remember reading about it in gaming magazines how it was the scariest and goriest game of all time, and it is partially true, but nowadays it's the second most comedically entertaining game on the list
5) Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within
6) Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers - yes, I like the FMV game more these days
7) Sanitarium
8) Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
9) Neverhood
10) The Black Mirror
Also, I sometimes think to myself
>RPGs get /vrpg/
>strategy games get /vst/
>adventure games don't get /vad/
>adventure games don't even have a /vag/ general on /vg/
But then I remember, there are almost no good adventure games made outside of the /vr/ years except Disco Elysium but it's controversial to say it's a point and click adventure game with RPG elements.

Some notable games I used to like but don't like as much these days
>the Space Quest series
I think I just liked the early games because of the pixel graphics and the typing interface.
>the Broken Sword series
The first two games here used to be my favorites as a kid because I really liked 2D drawn graphics at the time,
>Grim Fandango
Never liked it, even though I tried to get into it twice at different points in my life.
>Myst/Riven
Genuinely don't get what people saw in these. I tried playing one of the Myst games as a kid and died of boredom.
>Beneath a Steel Sky
As a kid, for some reason I thought it was darker/grittier than it really was.

All I played were the modern Sam & Max trilogy and I loved those games. Trying to get into the genre later. Will probably start with the retro Sam & Max.

I care more about the puzzles being good now than I did as a kid. I used to just see them as obstacles to experiencing the game's story and world. Now I almost see cutscenes as obstacles to the puzzles, though best is if all parts are good ofc.I recently beat Kyrandia 3 and the puzzles were almost as bad as Kyrandia 1. Which is honestly impressive considering how good and logical Kyrandia 2 was, probably a top 10 adventure game for me.

When I was a kid in the 90's, I didn't even know they existed, except for the odd encounter on my Genesis every now and then and thought they sucked. Then as a teen in the 2000's I was trying to be cool and edgy and just regurgitated Old Man Jenkins' opinions on them thinking I was clever. Then as an adult I tried them and played them and thought they were the best thing ever and spammed them. Now as an older adult, I think they're a very unique genre of video game with their own identity and should have a place within the canon of video games historically, and should be made more of in the future to create more balance between SCHUT and SPEED and RUN games.Adventure games literally, unironically, BUILT the video game medium as a whole, from titles like Zork which inspired countless people, to titles like King's Quest which inspired by countless video games, to titles from LucasArts which told incredibly memorable stories. There's a pretty high level point and click adventure horror game releasing at the end of this coming week, called Tenebris Somnia.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2121510/Tenebris_Somnia/Yes, fuck you, I know it's not retro, but it's still on-topic for the thread. It's probably the one game I've been looking forward to all year.

It's just good.

basically sour grapes, crabs in a bucket. the amount of writing and story material you need to not just sit through but heavily engage with for puzzles makes me very critical in that area and I find the vast majority of properties just don't hold interest for me. Like if I would change the channel of its movie equivalent I'm probably not going to play it. something like the first gabriel knight that combines a decent amount of edge with fun gameplay might as well be a unicorn.

used to think broken sword was the shit, replayed it and it was ass. I think it's due to wikipedia and things like that honestly.
Syberia I find I like more these days, such a odd, earthlike world.
Always wanted to play the longest journey, apparently it's not that great.
I just want a great, engaging story. I played a modern cyberpunk adventure game, technobabylon and it started well but soon got dull

I forgot about Blade Runner, that pushes The Black Mirror out of my Top 10. Blade Runner is the only cyberpunk game I ever liked, other than Deus Ex.

In the 90s the expectation for the genre was that the games should be comedic, and apart from the occasional edgefest like Harvester and Phantasmagoria, most games were. Every Lucasarts adventure was jokey with the notable exception of The Dig. As a kid I was content with that situation, having laughed at the humour in Monkey Island and its contempararies. I suppose I was in the right age group for it.These days the humour in those games irritates me. Someone above said that when they were a kid, Beneath A Steel Sky seemed more gritty than it really was. Well, that's probably because Gibbons' artwork is at variance with the narrative elements. The game looks like bleak, dystopian sci-fi, but the writing and voice acting belong to a Saturday morning kids' cartoon. That doesn't work well, and it would be better if all its aspects were facing in the same direction, preferably towards dystopian sci-fi. Broken Sword has a similar problem: the artwork and music give the game an air of class and maturity, but they're undermined when you engage in dialogue and find that everyone is a broad caricature with a silly voice. So this is how my tastes have changed: I've gone off the humour in old adventures and I prefer a serious tone now. Technobabylon pissed me off because it was always trying to be funny in that tiresome 90s way.

It hasn’t.I guess most people around here and in general see adventure games as games first and foremost. But ever since the very first adventure game I played (Larry 3), I’ve mainly seen the genre as a chance to roam and fool around. Actually finishing a game was always a side effect. So, to grab my attention, an adventure game had to offer something that hooked me, especially and foremost visually.tl:dr My taste hasn’t changed. I’m still in love with the games I loved 30–35 years ago, like Kyrandia 1 and 2, GK1, Discworld, The Last Express, Grim Fandango, MI 1–3, Simon 1, Lost Eden, Goblins, and so on.

Goalpost moving, but you can personally prepare mentally by following the narrative. Something you obviously cannot do.
[fastforwarding the rest of your shitpost]
>Oh yea? Then how come it isn't and it repeats mine?
It doesn't. It quotes the "experts" you quoted. The actual definition on Wikipedia doesn't involve the opinion of these "experts".
>this anon agrees
Just as I expected, that was you samefagging.
>Oh look, I broke him,
You wish.
>I did
You didn't and you never will and your contrarian pretending that you did is just another goalpost move, because you can't define an adventure game.

Reminder that Germany is single-handedly carrying the adventure game genre and has been the n1 adventure game market for at least 30 years. I am pretty sure it's Germany > France > Russia and other Soviet countries in terms of adventure game consumption. If you're a native English speaker (especially an Amerimutt or a "Queen's English speaker" = Indian), lower your tone when talking to me.Greetings from Germany! >An entire game that revolves explicitly around fighting one-on-one with other characters as the main mode of gameplay, where fights take place within fixed-size arenas and players use movesets based on the characters.
So in other words, Monkey Island: Swordfighting Edition is not a fighting game. You contradicted yourself that fast huh.>no fixed size arena
The fight takes place entirely through dialogue, the player has no control of the movement of their character or their weapon.
>players
There is only one player in Monkey Island: Swordfighting Edition, it fundamentally cannot work in multiplayer, unlike fighting games which naturally support multiplayer.
>players use movesets
The player cannot use any movesets, the player can only pick from dialogue options = find the puzzle solution in a list of options. The puzzle solution makes the player win the swordfight.Complete and utter destruction.>This pretty much one-to-one defines
The absolute hubris. I'm dying of laughter.

played this for the first time and it's now one of my favorite games. loved it. beautiful music, beautiful renders, compelling story, some of the puzzles were pretty tough but for the most part it's in line with other contemporary adventure games. recommend playing it on a VM since the scummvm version is bugged.

i was facinated by graphical adventure games as a kid. but after playing a few RPGs, they just seem too linear and boring. and more annoying "puzzles".-Grim Fandango was tolerable and i beat it w/o a walkthrough. best OST and greatest spooky love story ever told. better than the overhyped film noir movies it's based on IMO.
-BASS was good but i still needed a walkthrough to get unstuck.
-Indie Jones n le Fate of Atlantis was nostalgia drugs but some of the puzzles just made no sense to me. it's possible to beat it with the "fighting" route, but the fist fighting mechanics are shit.
