I think the game would benefit greatly from a new AI, just like nearly all old games. However, in terms of gameplay, it already hits the spot. JA2 could certainly have been more complex (I mean its original form), but in my opinion, that wouldn’t make the game better.

JA2 is juwt fine the way it is. The only tjing that bothers is the seamstress in Grumm who's dialog tree leads nowhere. She was probably supposed to have a quest for you.

Just the mere mention of 1.13 opens up a giant shitstorm, and if you really care about AI improvements SevenFM's 1.13+AI mod for 1.13 v7609 is what you would want. Finding the modpack may be a chore since he left the Bear's Pit over the war.
I would argue that playing Ironman rules with no night ops on each sector is more than difficult enough, and accepting losses as they come. Even Meduna on Novice is a bloodbath for most if you don't savescum.
