I never heard anyone use the word "goon" before 2010 so, no. Jerking it for hours as some kind of social movement wasn't part of the zeitgeist back then. They were just sexy games, some would say gratuitously sexy, with hot women that were nice to look at while playing. The term "gooner" did not exist. Gaming was overwhelmingly a male-oriented hobby, and NOT oogling at titties made you fucking GAY. Which was the biggest insult one could give.That being said, DOA1 was quite niche game with some silly boob physics. DOA2 however was a next-gen tech demo for many systems, and whole-heartedly embraced its sexy looks and memes. The full-spread posters that shipped with gaming magazines were literally some of the oldest fap material to my generation.

doa 1 only existed in fan hentai doujin circles doa 2 was HUGE but still looked down on universally in the fgc, even back in early 2000sthis is due to how overpowered and free counter holds were. everything was mid, and low counter hold DODGES HIGHS and beats lows. the worst part however is that you can counter hold out of stagger. this changed gameplay to where no one tried to do ground strings and instead fished for launchers which had guaranteed damage. but at that point its either play tekken or put the effort into vf. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7SnhIXmVUostill, doa graphics and animations were insane. shipping with 4 player tag made it an amazing party game too.

Not really. Games with attractive female characters where treated more like pin up art. Games like DOA, MK and Tomb Raider. True "gooner" game (porn games) weren't really a thing outside of Japan back in the day.Now with the way the internet is people act so stupid and form extreme opinions. It was just a game to see some hot chicks in do cool shit. There was the cheesecake element to it, but there wasn't some active thought of making it pornography. Likewise, it wasn't a game you'd play or mention in public but something you'd play with your close friends or by yourself in private (including that way. The babes here are absolute minxes). Actual porn games were rare and few and far between before the last decade or so other than the Japanese ones and they were upfront about being porn. Something's gone screwy that normal heterosexual dudes can't even enjoy entertainment meant for them without being called perverts or degenerates of some kind with no basis in reality.
