I've come to realize that the Famicom is the greatest console of all time
The library has a higher quantity of notable games than any other system, and a higher percentage than even the SNES
Beyond even the games though, it's unique in the way it feels like a ubiquitous game distribution platform for the 80s. Publishers could manufacture their own carts. There wasn't really much of a "seal of quality" like the NES, you could just release whatever. And you also had the Disk System for even more freedom of distribution. Since it started off trying to be somewhat of a computer, you had ways to even make your own games as a consumer, like Family BASIC and Dezaemon. It was heavily cloned, even as early as the early 90s. It's like the DVD of consoles, sure, Blu-Ray is higher quality, but it's also more locked down and requires more specialized hardware.

>Publishers could manufacture their own carts. That didn't last long though. I don't have an exact date but basically around the same time as the NES released in the US for reals, so around 1987, Nintendo of Japan pulled the same thing as for the NES and forced everyone to go through them for carts manufacturing, which became their entire new business model which they're still using today and the entire reason they've always used proprietary media, because it makes them money on every game produced for the system regardless of whether the game is bought by a customer.
The only exceptions by that point were Hudson and Namco which had a special contract but that ended in 1989I can't disagree with the overall statement, I've beaten around 380 NES/FC/FDS games and there is still at least 100 more I'd like to beat or playBut things like Family BASIC and Deazemon were incredibly niche

Any examples of cool software made with Family BASIC that can't easily be googled?

>Hardware was cheeped out to reach a $147 price point where it needed to be at $200 (things like a RGB PPU, spring loaded cartridge door, AV output for composite and RGB, removeable controllers, 8KB of both work and video ram, 128 16x16 sprites, 32 sprites per scan line, 3.58MHz 2A03 (2X the speed) and a power LED).
>Jumping the gun on the Disk System where rom prices were plummeting, meaning the Disk System shouldn't exist).
>Not taking Hudson's chip set when they needed it the most and releasing it as the Neo Famicom/NES.

Should I get the AV Famicom or the Twin Famicom?
Both have AV out, the Twin has a built-in Disk System which is very cool but it also has the hardwired controllers. How short are those wires? Would it be an issue with an Arino-like desk setup?

Same here, the nes felt like a children's toy and basically it was while the famicom + disk system was a medium for a more "matured" industry... just my two cents

It depends. I can send the argument for it and I tend to agree but there is also a fucking MASSIVE amount of shovel ware on it which you start to realize the more you dig through the library. It's either it or the SNES pound for pound the best retro console ever, imo.
