I’m too afraid to play this game. Because of this and the landmine map

>Scorpia of Computer Gaming World, who beta tested Wizardry IV, favorably reviewed it in 1987, stating that the game had been worth the long wait before release. She acknowledged that the game was very difficult (and requiring knowledge of Wizardry I), and that during testing "some of the best game players in the country tripped up somewhere (myself included)", but stated that it was "eminently fair and is, perhaps, one of the most finely-balanced games I've ever played. Every puzzle, every encounter, every clue ... has been worked out with careful exactitude".What the fuck was she smoking?

> 1500 enemies > 200 enemies with endless reinforcements This literally never happens. I 100%d the game. It’s like 100 enemies max and that’s only if the level scaling rolls a nat20 and decides to fuck on you

Going through Knight of Diamonds right now. Was going pretty well. But my team fell down a chute on level three and got their teeth kicked in by a shit ton of monsters. Building a rescue party. Hopefully I can just tell in and out without issue.

And IF you get 100 enemies, they’re all very low level compared to you

> The majority of the world map doesn't need to be visited in order to beat the game. And I could go grab the ultimate sword in Ultima 3 in the first 20 minutes, but that logic only applies to speedruns and second playthroughs. A first time player will have to explore most of the world

You’re overfixating on outliers, multiplying them by 4, and then acting like the whole game is that way

I just recently read about Wizardry 4"s gameplay and it is fascinating to me. I love the whole concept and how each level was so wildly different and punishing. I think my absolute favorite thing about the game as far as I read and watched a video about it is the initial room and the absolutely creative (some might say diabolical) way in which the player discovers the method of exiting the room. 1) The way the player gets to choose what to summon 2) Priests are available to summon 3) Actually realizing by accident or from experience playing the previous game that priests can cast Light which reveal hidden doors 4) Having no control over the behavior of what you summon 5) Summoned beings are only active during combat 6) Only by chance does the AI-controlled summoned priests cast light - during combat - to reveal the only exit - post-combat - from the initial 2x2 walled room the play starts in: a hidden door. Fucking brilliant. I love that the dev pulled out all stops and created such a fever dream of a game.

The Japanese Gaiden and Empire games are like a bizarro world what if scenario of what would happen if they started back porting 6-8 content into the fifth game's engine.

I find games like this fascinating. Nerdiness like this is impressive.
