I prefer Castlevania but Super Metroid is still a top 5 and possibly top 3 metroidvania for me. Sometimes I think I prefer Zero Mission but every time I replay the series it just reminds me why Super Metroid is still the best one. The wall jump is jank though and the controls aren't as refined as they are in Zero Mission, but it's still a better game overall.

Super metroid is the epitome midwit game, the final boss is especially offending as it's a cinematic like the worst modern AAA shit out there. SoTN had it beat in style and 3rd gen sandbox sidescrollers had it beat brain usage.

You can only do so much with 4mb tiles, 2 layers of parallax and the snes colors and sprite limitations, it's like saying X nes game is impressive but objectively it isn't really comparable.

It's a very good game and very influential.The problem came with picrel. This unreasonably hyped the game for years into a thing it never was.I never met another person who called Super Metroid "The greatest video game of all time." between 1994 and 2001, I'm not sure how EGM came to this conclusion, I don't really care.After EGM #150, there are people who never fucking played SM explaining how great it is. Then, naturally, there is pushback to this online and everyone starts assuming if you're praising SM, you're a poser parroting someone else's opinion. Contrarianism also heavily plays into it, it's a knee-jerk reaction to shit on something everyone is glazing.A young person trying Super Metroid today who expects the GOAT is going to be severely disappointed. It just isn't that. It wasn't then, it's not now. So they will give a response to it that feels as if they were let down or disappointed. Adding to the aura of negativity SM gets online.

I love Metroid, but Super doesn't even crack my top 3. I'd much rather replay Fusion or Zero Mission or AM2R. I don't have anything against Super or think it's terrible, but when people play Super and only Super and refuse to play anything else because the other games are "awful" because they aren't EXACTLY the same as Super Mission, I really roll my eyes.

Castlevania is much more flashy and deep, but it's not as streamlined and precise in the difficulty curve. Super Metroid has a few problems. It's controls are 100% customizable, but no matter how you change them, they are always uncomfortable to use in certain situations. The biggest flaw, is how linear the beginning of the game is, unless you are super fast and sequence break. Both take a lot of practice and skill which leads to my point. You're going to play the game the same way for the first hour for a long time, and that just gets boring.

The first area feels too tutorialized, and I dropped the game once or twice after completing that area, too bored to move on. I know the same thing happened to a friend of mine. Once I got to the next area, it gets a lot better, and it really became the GOAT for me.
