This company just is not that good. In terms of RPGs, all their stuff gets blown away by the RPGs that were coming out on PC throughout the 80s and 90s. In terms of action games, Sega was the king in that department. Nintendo was always mid at everything.

Miyamoto has admitted to shifting Mario's design over time to be based on Mickey Mouse and that they were basically trying to become the next Disney (witch they strangely now are). Fair enough and it's worked out for them, but it's not very original.
Then again, Sonic was just some random animal standing behind a cardboard cutout of an early 90s kid with flashy sneakers, gloves and a smirk. One of literally thousands of such cases.

To be frank, I don't think I've ever seen Nintendo make a shmup that didn't have somebody else involved. Star Fox was technically co-developed by Argonaut. Though, would you also count games like Space Firebird also having co-developers? Ikegami Tsushinki developed most (if not all) of Nintendo's early arcade titles if I'm not mistaken.
