How did Nintendo get away with releasing a system with worse colors for Black-and-White Game Boy games than the Super Game Boy 4 years later? Metroid 2 on this thing makes me want to puke.

Supporting SGB colours on the GBC would be like having two systems in one. Considering how few games really made good use of the SGB it doesn't seem worth the effort.
The GBC basically marked the death of the SGB anyway, from that point onwards every GB/C game released with SGB support would have very lazy support with just borders and nothing in terms of colours, with basically only one exception: Pokémon Silver/Gold. Which had GBC colour support anyway.
