the only case where I consistently do it is 5th gen 240p 3d definitely was not meant to be viewed raw, it needs pixel blending. outside of that I can take it or leave it. some 6th gen games look good with 720p but I'm fine playing native..

That 480p gen (ps2/xbox/gc) is the one that has the most to gain when it comes to upscaling, still it's not all games, and it's a case by case basis. The 240p 3d games (psx/sat/n64) very few games look better blown up to HD, some can look better with a 2X upscale.
Still in both cases you kind of just have to deal with the blown up UI elements, rarely does it look good, especially when you start integrating widescreen hacks.

Most of the time yes, but systems like PS2 and GameCube are the best use cases for increased rendering resolution.With PS1 it's a case-by-case basis. Something like Jumping Flash does look really nice with increased resolution removed vertex snapping, and unfiltered / nearest textures.

PS2 games (usually) look better upscaled. Because they are mostly just modern 3d games at lower resolutions. 5th gen games often don't look right because that was the jank era of 3D exploration and experimentation. Games like Final Fantasy 9 look fucking wierd, for example, high-res models on the prerendered cgi. But it's not like the shitty psx grainy resolution looks great either, so you are kind of fucked either way. The only thing that's certain is allowing 6th gen discussion on /vr/ was a mistake.

It depends on the console. The PS2 is weird because it has a lower native resolution than its contemporaries (the Dreamcast's resolution is amazing). Add the de-interlacing patches that halve the resolution, and it gets worse. I like to upscale it, but not so much that the HUD looks out of place.N64 is another weird case because its original look is really blurry, and a lot of emus don't replicate the anti-aliasing or the dithering correctly, so it varies from game to game, but I usually don't go above 480p.in the case of games with prerendered backgrounds if the emulator has the option i always supersample them..

I run PSX games at native res because of lmao wobble and perspective correction is very hit and miss. For other 3D platforms and especially windows PC games I throw modern computing power at them and play at 4k (or 2880x2160 if no widescreen is available).Pic is actually a great example - if /vr/ was around when the special edition came out anons would be complaining that running at 800x600 on your voodoo just isn't right and not intended. No, you should ONLY use 320x240 software rendering.
