Warp panels, maybe? Eh not really. Pokemon doesn't really have much challenges involving player movement.

Closest thing - and this would be a stretch - would be Pokemon Coliseum which was developed by a much smarter team, was at the final boss his team hard countered the legendary beasts. So, if you ran those and trained nothing else, you were given a much harder time.Otherwise yeah, only gen 1 / FRLG Voltorb lightly inconveniencing the player

This is more applicable to romhacks. >Ohoho it seems you have previous knowledge of type matchups and/or gyms, in this clever subversion of expectations the Pokemon you are fighting is specifically designed to counter baitmon we set for the player just before the fight that would seemingly be a good matchup

In Gen 1, using the TM for Psychic on your Butterfree bricks your entire save file even though Butterfree is your strongest party member at that point in the game. In the inverse of this, the TM for Return that Rowan gives you at the start of Platinum is best used on your starter or Starly immediately instead of saving it for later like every other TM in existence. In Gen 3, there is not enough experience available in the early game to raise a full team of six effectively unless you slam on the brakes to grind wild encounters. Playing with just three or four mons instead of maxing out your party size will allow you to keep up with the level scaling with zero grinding required all the way up until Mauville when you can finally start working with a full deck. Gen 5's experience boost for mons that could evolve but haven't yet plus Eviolite means that some mons like Munchlax can be stronger than their evolved stages. In the Legends series, if there's a mon you want to train, you need to first catch it then ignore it and then farm the area for an Alpha to show up that will almost be guaranteed to be superior.

This. Like giving every water Pokemon in a water gym Ice Beam or a ground move.

The closest thing (and it's a very toned down version for little Timmy) would be obtaining your starter's Z-Crystal right before totem Mimikyu, to bait you into wasting your Z-Move on Disguise I took the bait on my first run

Guts doubles ATK of burned Pokemon. Same with Quick Feet and Paralisis.Wooba and Pyukumuku are designed to shit on players that blindly use their strongest attacks.

Pokemon would have to have any difficulty, forced or otherwise, in the actual game (not "competitive" autism) for this comparison to work.

I just remembered! If you try to trap Entei, Raikou, or Suicune with Mean Look or Shadow Tag in their appearance in Fire Red & Leaf Green, they'll use Roar to delete themselves from existence because getting Roar'd counts as the player running away from the encounter. In GSC, trying this same trick by putting them to Sleep reveals the sacred beasts are notorious sleepwalkers.

On the route to fight Elesa you pass through the desert resort where at least one npc recommends that you catch a ground type for the upcoming battle, only for her ace to be Emolga, an electric/flying type

>Encounter a Bronzor, intuit that the metal plate-looking thing is probably a steel type. "Ah, knowing the type chart gives me an advantage against this defensive beast!" >Switch to your fire monkey and throw an Ember at it. >Enemy Bronzor's Heatproof tells you to fuck off! >Brute force through it by spending more PP and taking damage. >Encounter another. "I won't fall for this trickery again!" >Send out Geodude or something. >Use magnitude/dig/whatever. >Enemy Bronzor's Levitate! The attack missed! >Run from every subsequent time-wasting plate from that point on.

Elesa with Emolga I guess? Pokemon final bosses used to have specific "counters" to box legends but it was contingent on gamefreak not being stupid when designing them.Works >Lance's Aerodactyl has rock slide for Lugia/Ho-oh >Cynthia's Garchomp has EQ for Dialga and dragon rush for Palkia >Ghetsis's Hydreigon has dragon pulse for your newly caught Reshiram/Zekrom These work because they have the speed and often level advantage, in addition to being stab.Doesn't work >Steven's Aggron has thunder for Kyogre and solar beam for Groudon >Diantha's Hawlucha has rock tomb for Yveltal and poison jab for Xerneas These don't work because they do no fucking damage whatsoever.

Came here to post this - Wobbuffet, and by extension Destiny Bond and Counter/Mirror Coat. An ability like Poison Point/Static/Cursed Body could also count. Mons with thorns-like damage, especially Ferrothorn w/Rocky Helmet
