Not big on shipping but after watching Kanto and Johto I hit the conclusion that Misty was intentionally kept away from Serena because it is a CONSISTENT character trait for her to get aggro towards ANY girl who shows even the slightest romantic interest in Ash. I feel like the writers didn't want to stir the pot and cause a shipping war so Misty and Serena never meet or interact even though they are literally two of the most important female companions with Misty having the most episodic appearances out of all of them and Serena being the designated love interest.

I did a rewatch of OG Kanto and Johto and I am 1000% certain that it is only nostalgia why anyone ships Ash and Misty. They have almost zero romantic chemistry. Jessie and Misty IRL would come off as crazy and prone to anger. Obviously, nobody would gaf about applying IRL standards to cartoon characters; we like dysfunctional dynamics like the Simpsons or Looney Toons cause it's harmless and fun to watch. But other than it being 'fun' or 'funny', there's basically zero reason to think stupid childish boy + crazy angry girl is obviously the best ship.Now, considering that people grew up on this as a weekly show, I'd imagine that there's a lot of time for people's minds to fill in the gaps and make up any fake romantic tension. But watching it all in < 2 months it's pretty clear that there's basically nothing there.I haven't gotten to a Kalos rewatch but I saw it while it was still going on and remember enjoying the character interactions. Serena getting angry at Ash being a POS that one time was pretty sad to see.

I just watched MPM 2 subbed. Idk what you're going off of man. The ending where she shyly asks to join him?The whole episode they're just ribbing each other like old friends. I never watched Journeys so idk about her interactions there, but in the OG series the closest you get is stuff like "Misty you're not pretty" of Misty yelling at Ash. Hell, the beginning of the episode, Pikachu plays a dumb friendly prank on Ash, but when does this even happen in the OG series or how often?It was a cute episode. I enjoyed the interaction between Ash, Pikachu, Misty, Psyduck, and the water pokes. I wish Team Rocket actually got something to eat, or at least the protags gave them something to eat before they BTFO. But none of this is what I'd call "romantic banter". Now unless someone has an XY episode (other than the final kissing episode) for me to watch where Ash x Serena have great romantic chemistry, I'm not gonna make any claim that Serena is better. The biggest weakness of Amourshipping is that it doesn't actually make a good story. Anybody can see that from all the Amoursgipping fan comics which are extremely cringe and has an out-of-character Ash nothing like the one people loved. While people actually felt that old Ash had returned on MPM episode 02 simply due to his interaction with Misty.Most important things about romantic plot is its ability to make a good story. Pokeshipping and Pearlshipping has that ability but Amourshipping lacks it.

My boomer take is that Ash and Misty was more compelling because they were two clashing characters created at the start of the show. Serena did not exist until the show was fifteen years into its run and was prominent in a season which is bizarrely disconnected from the entire rest of the series. Misty continues to appear and be integrated in all of the surrounding series. On top of that, Ash's characterization had a major shift in XY making him much nicer and toning down his brash attitude. It was nice to se a mature side to him but due to BW coming immediately before this it was less of a development and felt more like a total rebrand of the character. I simply cannot look at the Satoshi from gens 1-4 and see him behind the eyes of the one in XY. So as a result I'm just not invested in who that character ends up with.His obliviousness to Serena also becomes forced after a while. At first it's a funny shonen trait, after a while it legitimately damages their dynamic in my eyes. Young boys are hardly immune to crushes and he was absolutely not this dense in the beginning of the show. There is literally an episode where Misty having a crush on another guy throws him off of his game. His character seems to have been watered down to the standard shonen trope, leaving Serena the more compelling of the two despite being created over a decade later. I just don't see the appeal beyond wanting to live in Ash's shoes and experience Serena. I don't want to be Ash.
