Honestly, this depends on your hobbies.Pokemon fan? There’s definitely stuff to do in Japan. Studio ghibli fan? Ghibli museum Anime/manga fan? Probably akihabaraThen there’s the niche Japanese subcultures.Maid cafes? Akihabara with the occasional Shinjuku Idol fan? Plenty of lives in Shibuya AKB48 fan? Believe it or not, Akihabara Jfashion? HarajukuAnd for more normie/non-weeb interests… High end dining: Shinjuku, Ginza Nightlife: kabukicho (east side of Shinjuku) Temples: they’re everywhereWith a Japan trip, it’s very easy to see things like the Shibuya crossing as a “tourist attraction.” I swear that crossing is one of the least interesting things you could find or see in Japan

I have a love/hate relationship with Tokyo because it's just so grey. I recommend going Kyoto and not spending too much time in the popular tourist areas like Kiyomizu/Gion/Arashiyama. However, I always would recommend climbing Fushimi Inari from the first train at like 5:30. Don't even bother if you can't wake up early. From a Kansai base in Kyoto you can go to Osaka, Kinosaki Onsen, Nara, Hiroshima, and more. Unless you speak Japanese, don't count on chatting up locals easily. But, if you are familiar with Japanese customs and etiquette and can memorize a handful of phrases, that goes a huge way with a much smaller commitment. If you're in Kyoto on the 21st of any month, I'd recommend checking out the Toji Temple market.

I recommend going to the temple and Nara and buying as many deer biscuits as you can fit in your cargo shorts to feed the deer with. They are extremely well behaved and will wait patiently in line before blessing you and if you are lucky doing a little dance.
