Why do all cheese graters have the rubber thing on the bottom that gets all gross?

occupational safety anon. you don't want the grater to slip out from under you and then eat your fingers.it can be removed for cleaning and you should be doing this regularly

It causes friction and makes the grater not move whilst you are grating

Mine actually has a container on the inside and the bottom acts as a lid for the container
Not that I ever use it like that
