Clowns were an archetypical character in theater, over time they adopted the traits of the character known as the harlequin who itself was an evolution of an older archetype known as the wild man of EuropeThe modern circus clown is an evolution of the most famous clown design that was created by a Freemason who is theorized to have heavily drawn from his travels to India in its design. Essentially, the modern clown is at its core not just an archetype of a silly mischief maker, but a representation of various ancestor spirit representations, known from the Christian perspective as Nephilim. Or at least that's what they mean to the Masonic order who created them, who have ran the circuses in all modern history with the Shriners still placing high importance on performing as circus clowns as well as using jester symbolism in their heirarchy with the highest honor being the title of Jester
