I don't get it.
People talk like robotics has reached AI levels of breakthrough. Meanwhile all these humanoid robots look ass. These are just ASIMO from 15 years ago, but with a better battery and more movement range. FUCKING ABYSMAL LEVELS OF ADVANCEMENTS IN 15 YEARS!
And notice how none of these humanoid robot videos have them doing something useful. Maybe because we don't really need humanoid robots all that much. Other form factor robots, yes - humanoids... maybe only as sexdolls.

They are relatively cheap compared to other humanoid presence, and as a bonus it doesn't shit on the street.
Imagine a 10k robot with free AI models can replace any adult daycare jobs or even PhD professors. A human costs more than that in food per year. And raising a new human? Over ten times more expensive.

Asimo was all scripted. The point is now humanoid robots are expected to navigate ok their own, use vision models, learn from watching, get in trouble and get out of it, thanks to VLMs, AI TTS and STT, and "reasoning" with some LLM ("hm, that didn't work. The user is expecting armpit sex, which requires raising arm" etc).
Actuators got immensely better, now they can have actual fingers, etc. Good enough for cooking. Batteries got better, chips got insanely better and so did connectivity; they can probably run all models in the robot except for the reasoning LLM, which can be seamlessly connected over 5G.
We are set for a revolution as we connect modern joints and actuators with more general-purpose AIs.
I do agree they look bad because they want to be business safe but a bit after the first commercial models, they'll probably want to make them at least decent for home use.
I will buy one when it looks like this, even if she'll cost a 5 figure.

For the vast majority of robot jobs, a specialized shape will be better. We really dont need them to be humanoid form.

Why make it humanoid at all? Who not give it 15 arms and wheels for legs?

Japan is making some good ones, I want a SENKO-SAN model (picrel) to help me clean my house and make me dinner, I'd love her so much and probably rope if she broke down.China has also developed a dog bot called THE GNASHER, you can program it to go for jeets!
