Asimo was all scripted. The point is now humanoid robots are expected to navigate ok their own, use vision models, learn from watching, get in trouble and get out of it, thanks to VLMs, AI TTS and STT, and "reasoning" with some LLM ("hm, that didn't work. The user is expecting armpit sex, which requires raising arm" etc). Actuators got immensely better, now they can have actual fingers, etc. Good enough for cooking. Batteries got better, chips got insanely better and so did connectivity; they can probably run all models in the robot except for the reasoning LLM, which can be seamlessly connected over 5G. We are set for a revolution as we connect modern joints and actuators with more general-purpose AIs. I do agree they look bad because they want to be business safe but a bit after the first commercial models, they'll probably want to make them at least decent for home use. I will buy one when it looks like this, even if she'll cost a 5 figure.

For the vast majority of robot jobs, a specialized shape will be better. We really dont need them to be humanoid form.
