Question for the wise oldfags...What actually makes the whole market pump at once? Everyone always says "the whales" like they're some mysterious Illuminati entity controlling everything from a dark room, but that explanation has never really convinced me. Whales are still just people or institutions making individual trades.Obviously supply and demand is part of it. With Bitcoin, Ethereum and other major coins, it makes sense. News drops, hype starts, influencers start talking, people get greedy and money flows in. But then you look at some completely forgotten shitcoin that nobody has talked about in years, with barely any real interest or activity, and somehow it's pumping at almost the exact same time as the rest of the market. Who's actually buying that shit?I find it hard to believe thousands of people suddenly wake up on the same day and decide they're interested in the same random dead coins. It almost looks like large players are putting money into crypto as an asset class without really caring what each individual coin is. So what is actually happening behind the scenes? Is it market makers, trading bots, funds buying baskets of coins, liquidity moving between pairs, arbitrage, or something else?

Interest rates. It's mysterious because it IS indeviduals or groups colluding in secrecy until their decision is made public.

it's bots. the market picks up for whatever reason, trade bots detect a minor bump and funnel their owners' tether into that. that increase is detected by more bots which do the same. At some point a threshold for a bull market is triggered and bots start spreading the money around looking for whatever might significantly. it's all mob hysteria done at electronic speed. and the crashes are equally synchronized and spectacular

Simple answer: When Bitcoin goes up, bots start into action.

You might not realize this, op, but to gain an edge on their trading arbitrage, major financial firms have been doing automated not trading, fine tuning their algos year after year, since the 1970s. They're completely on autopilot now, and are joined by thousands (if not millions) of the exact same bots, running nearly identical pattern tracing, with some latency differences because of origin, and with highly variable magnitudes of impact based on their allowed spends. Small ripples become large cascades of price action, seemingly out of nowhere entirely due to the accelerating effects of these automations

FWIW, I started digging into the creators of shitcoins around the end of the 2020 bull run. With enough digging on ERC20 deployers you could see that they had multiple of these, some of them with absolutely no activity. The tokens would be created, bunches of money would flow in from around 100 accounts, then it would flow back out via the liquidity during the famous "rug pull".Now you probably got caught in a rug pull, and a lot of those tokens were legit scam artists doing their scammy scam. But a lot of them were also just fancy money laundering schemes. If you follow the liquidity tokens those would go back to uniswap, then trade back into accounts that would do the same thing on EVERY rug pull.It was money tumbling, and laundering, but completely automated. After 1000 shitcoins you could hide $1bil in assets and deploy them anywhere in the world. I figured the add on of "buy advertising on 4chan, bot the hell out of sentiment, and grab a few extra $$$" was just for the extra dollars that North Korea could make while funneling money to Russia or whoever the fuck it was.Anyway, it wasn't so complicated, but the 2020 bullrun made random ERC20 tokens popular, and we all got caught up in the mania. The same shit is still happening especially across bridges to cheaper networks than ETH, but it was never more than weebs stumbling into a mafia operation.Have a blessed day.

Algo bots are responsible for 70-80% of volume in the stock market. More like 80-90% in crypto. There's hundreds of thousands of them, and they all function differerently. But as an example, when bot #1 notices that Bitcoin is pumping, it automatically tries to buy a lot of other altcoins before the other bots, because the person who programmed it knows that the rising tide lifts all boats. A lot of bots are trying to do the same thing, and thus you get a pump across the board

your old shitcoin is mostly paired in BTC. That means, say BTC increase 10% in one day, your shitcoin is still worth the same amount of BTC, and then... increase 10% in one day as well. In 2026, an important part of the market is still paired in BTC, although less than years ago when everything was mostly paired in BTC. I had a typical ERC20 shitcoin with low trading volume that was mostly paired in ETH on uniswap. I didn't understand it's moves. Then i checked ETH moves. And this shitcoin moved almost exactly like ETH moved. There is an other explanation, that goes along, and that is trading bots, and investment funds that coordinate their investment. Last august 2026 BTC pump was obviously coordinated by major funds. It wasn't organic. They did it earlier than expected to reinvest in the bottom before the plebs.
