China is the manufacturing hub of the world, the US doesn't manufacture jack shit. They use to depend on the dollar for economic trade, but now they're getting all the countries around them to hold gold too instead of dollars. And they can just trade goods and gold with each other outside of dollars. They don't need to pump the dollar's baggies anymore.

The OP pic of China's gold reserve is also hilariously misleading. It makes it look like China suddenly bought a massive amount of gold at once, but really they were just not reporting the true amount they were buying from the west so they can buy it up at a discount. Now that critical mass has been achieved, they can reveal their power level.

Maybe betting on a commodity they can trade with the world if the US enters a period of instability and the world loses confidence in the dollar as a standard. This would be especially strategic to hedge against a break up of the US or the EU.
