Are houses even that expensive? Average home price in USA is only $364k, the average salary is $66k so when you’re ready to buy a home and start a family with your wife you will have $132k combined income and a $2300 monthly home payment. Your monthly take home is around $7500, so you have $5k/month left over for food (4 people will be around $1k), car payments ($1.5k), utilities ($300), home maintenance ($500), random shit you need to buy ($500), now let’s just round that up to $4k you can still put away $1k a month and do a $6k vacation and put $6k a year away. Within 5 years your salaries will have gone up but your home payments will not. And that will continue and you’ll be able to save more and more. Homes are perfectly affordable. You can also live more frugally and reduce all those numbers, or have only one kid or none and be relatively well off. Homes aren’t as cheap as they were 75 years ago compared to wages but the idea that the average person can’t have one should they want one is off base. Everyone just thinks they need a 2 million dollar home because you’re trained to want to keep up with the Instagram crowd, but guess what, not everyone gets to have that.
