Deku is a fine character, I don't hate him like many seem to do but he also doesn't spark anything from a writing stand point for me. Him not wanting to kill Shigaraki is 100% correct from a heroic idealized stand point which is what the #1 hero is. He does his job as an action figure well and gets the thematic message of the work across even if it is heavy handed. Maybe his Clark Kent/Peter Parker-ness wasn't off set by enough Superman-ness, but that lack of a divide does help with his genuineness.The manga largely mimics my thoughts on Deku. Horikoshi is one of the most talented artist shonen jump has ever had and his character designs are on a different level in terms of quality x quantity.
