Director Goro Taniguchi (Code Geass, One Piece: Film RED) gave his thoughts on the current state of the anime industry:
>In recent years, adaptations of existing works have increasingly become the mainstream because they’re easier to turn a profit on, but I believe that if Japanese animation were to rely solely on adaptations, it will be the end of the road.
>When adapting a source material, what anime creators rely on is the skill of an arranger. That is, someone who arranges existing material—not someone who writes lyrics or composes music. If you don’t also practice creating things from scratch, like writing lyrics or composing music—and I’m guilty of this myself—then even producers, for example, start to lose sight of what to do. You gradually end up treating the source material as nothing more than a subcontracting job.
>Ultimately, I believe that when the current wave of adaptations from source material eventually subsides, the unique elements of original works should remain intact. It is precisely because of this that the works that survive go on to become the mainstream of the next era. I think this is what makes Japanese animation so great. That is why I want to ensure that original works continue to exist.
>That said, I really want as wide an audience as possible to watch my work. Normal people aren't into sci-fi, "cheat abilities" and isekai stories.

it's retarded to make animation an original medium. it's an industrial process that merges the work of dozens of artists that need to feed themselves plus all kinds of high tech capital investments. It's basically the most insane medium to try spontaneity or untested concepts in, and it has only ever worked in the past by making one guy the fuhrer that controls a bunch of worshipful slaves that obviously have no career path to becoming the fuhrer themselves, meaning it's a dead end for companies that try it

On top of Code Geass and that One Piece movie this guy also worked on Yugioh, Planetes, Honey and Clover, Kurogane no Linebarrel, Dogs, and Maria the Virgin Witch in terms of adaptations. Outside of adaptations but within franchises he worked on several Gundam series as well as the Code Geass sequel movie. People with beliefs should stick to what they believe in. If everyone is going to complain but still add to what they dislike nothing is ever going to change.

I think it's mostly a mentality issue, the older generation of animators wanted to tell stories too but the newest ones seem to be content just adapting someone else's work.

Bullshit. All "genres", "categories", etc. have their own flops, mediocrities, "dying in a blaze of temporary glory" and "timeless" works. Originals like Guren Lagann might be timeless, but what about, say, Valvrave, Aldnoah Zero and Guilty Crown? All either hyped up while it aired then forgotten, or shat the bad towards the end and fallen from grace after initially doing well. To pretend that originals are the "special one out" is utterly ridiculous.
That said, we could certainly do with a few originals again. I haven't even picked any of the few that still exist up recently because their synopsis didn't make me interested in the slightest.
What the anime industry vehemently needs right now is to stop creating those damn "coming-of-age stories" of which we already had enough of 10 years ago.

Most anime are still anime & manga adaptations, and original works are a recently new trend that simply wasn't there, at least not until Your Name after which producers finally started taking bigger risks involved with the production of original works.There are much bigger problems, however. There are simply not enough animators to do this job anymore, whether original or adaptation works. Sad demographic reality
