how come we get dozens of isekai slop animes every year but none of them have any memorable character designs? even though battle school harems just had everyone wear some kind of school uniform you could identify a bunch of them just from seeing the uniforms. with these isekai trash piles even though they're mostly fantasy with no limitations on outfit designs characters always end up looking like they're wearing random low level mmo gear.

That's exactly the point since this infestation of isekai is still taking major queues from SAO. The authors don't know enough about history to properly worldbuild a medieval or renaissance society so they just copy paste bullshit from their wasted youths playing Ragnarok Online and Dragon Quest

The number of LNs published has been increasing over time. That means that more illustrators are needed, and therefore the entry barrier has also been lowered. Being able to draw well doesn't mean that you're also a good character designer. I think that's why many LN series have forgettable designs nowadays.

HARD MODE: It doesn't count if the character is bound to their "iconic outfit" only. The character must remain memorable with a total of at least 3 different outfits. This filters out pretty much any characters who due to editor interference only ever wear one set of clothing for brand recognition and should narrow the list by A LOT.
