Dan is the only one capable of protecting the dignity of the yokozuna rank from having yet another mong mediocrity stain sumo by calling himself yokozuna. If it weren't for Dan's domination kiriSHITma would already be a yokozuna and we would be stuck with yet another horseSHITryu tier sack of crap defiling the rank for years. All sumo fans should thank their gods that Dan was sent to us

It took Chiyonofuji three tournaments at Ozeki to get to Yokozuna. It took Aonishiki three tournaments at Ozeki to get to Sekiwake.

Dan is the first great yokozuna of the post-mong era, he is the dominant figure who will put an end to the time of troubles that started with the collapse of the reign of absentee yokozuna terunofuji. The pretenders to the crown who sprung up during the interregnum will be cast aside by Dan and sumo will be granted a peaceful new era of dignified hinkakutastic yokozuna dominance

What rikishi are you most excited to watch next basho? For me I think it's a combination of Dan and Atamin, with a side order of Asahifuji. Atamifuji is going to be filled with fighting spirit after finally breaking through his ceiling.

My amazing conspiracy theory: Chiyonofuji’s sudden retirement in May 1991 was forced by external forces. Sumo officials or insiders found proof of his steroid use and gave him an ultimatum to immediately retire or they would go public and ruin his legacy forever. Shoulder injury was just a convenient exit strategy to sweep a massive doping scandal under the rug.

Anon08/08/26, 12:20No.267530
Reminder that the job of a Yokozuna is to make sumo exciting. With this in mind, both Hoshoryu and Futahaguro are/were better Yokozuna than Kisenosato who was by far the worst Yokozuna of all time.

Kisenosato is one giant "what if..." in sumo. What if he didn't injure his chest muscle that hindered him completely? How many yushos would he have claimed.

Honestly wouldn't mind seeing Kirishima manage to get the rope this coming basho and then Aonishiki to manage the feat by end of year. It would give us a classical split of Yokozuna >Aonishiki - all around terrifying, some injury concerns that stop him just running rampant >Onosato - utterly dominant when uninjured (he is always injured) >Kirishima - consistently good, filters the trash out of the yusho race, always chokes himself in the end >Hoshoryu - prevents other guys from zensho and always looks good for a yusho (never does though), hands out meme kinboshi to keep us entertained I could really go for that zuna spread. Note that things could change (Mongolians could stop choking, Aonishiki could get more injuries, Onosato could use there being multiple zunas to actually rehab and come back to what we know he can be) but atm that would still be a good lineup.

I think the fact that we're in the all time record for most 12-3Ys in a row should tell you that no one actually deserves rope right now. Hell we didn't just beat the record by one, we beat it by fucking two.

A
Anon08/09/26, 19:51No.267672
Do they take into consideration specifically the win or the loss count? For example, would a 12-3 with a playoff win be on similar standing to a 13-2 no playoff considering the 12-3P would be 13 wins

What is better? To be a sumo fan in an age of well-matched competitors jostling for rank, or an age of dominant individuals that hold the top ranks decisively for years? We're currently in the former, obviously. I can't help thinking that in some ways it's preferable to the latter. Both can be engaging for different reasons.

Yokozuna should go back to being licensed by a single family for the sole purpose of recognizing whichever ozeki are popular and dignified enough to perform in front of the royal family. Breaking tradition by making it a sporting rank was a mistake.
