~~Tokyo Climbing Edition~~
>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.
>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.
>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).
Here are some useful resources for sizing:
>Do I need Magdust/Rugne Gear?
No, most chalk you find will be good. Mammut is older, cheaper, and as reliable as they come.
>Do I need to start hangboarding?
Hangboarding is a tool used to improve climbing, but you likely won't *need* it until you've climbed for 2-3 years. Even that's generous. Just climb.

Recently found out that if the skin on your fingers grows thicker, it sweats less (until it wears back down again). I started using some hand serum that supposedly makes your skin grow faster, and after a week it seems to be doing something, just barely.

Wanted to follow up. Why every ten days? Any reason or just vibes? My routine is every two weeks, but in April I want to do twice a week, Mondays and Fridays. Yesterday I did 3 sets of 5 seconds, Friday I will do 4 sets of 5 seconds, then Monday I'll do 5 sets of 5 seconds. After that, I'll up the weight, between 1-2kg. Thoughts? What's your routine like? how many sets on 20mm? 15mm? Do you train three finger drag or just half crimp? Since my last post, my max hang went up by 2.5kg, and it's been quite the fight.

I've accepted that I'll never be able to climb due to injuries so I treat it like a spectator sport. Hopefully there's a gym near me where I can just chill and cheer people on without being expected to actually climb myself. Bouldering is my jam, not too interested in watching people do lead but I understand all of it takes some variant of skills and physique.

What is the reason why certain boulder climbers will opt to not bring a chalk bag with them? Sometimes the commentators will point out that they're losing grip and trying to get some from the back of their pants but have no way to reinforce it.

People who say technique is what's holding me back on moonboard are so full of shit. I start a hangboarding routine, and immediately send my project within 3 weeks. Cruxes feel so much easier, I'm not pumping myself out on each and every single move. Can't believe I got baited into thinking that tension alone would've made me a V8 climber.Technique/tension still massively important though, but it's insane how much a simple 7lb increase in max-hanging made those crimps feel.

Last year I posted a kind of live blog while attempting to rope solo Rooster Rock. That was on the /out/ climbing general which is dead now (rip). I had to bail after the first pitch when my twine lanyard disintegrated. Now I'm back to try it again, with a proper lanyard this time. First up is this lovely approach along the side of the freeway.>not your personal blog

A
Anon04/29/26, 21:13No.260788
Ready to climb I guess. Climber's strand goes to the tree anchor; brake strand goes through the microtrax and then down into a big pile. The trax is to prevent rope drag and hopefully ensure that the grigri locks in a fall.

A
Anon04/29/26, 21:41No.260792
I brought rubber bands this time to trap the rope so the weight of it doesn't pull slack through the grigri. First pitch is climbed and now I gotta clean and reclimb.

A
Anon04/29/26, 22:10No.260798
Starting up p2. This is a trad pitch, but the climbing is even easier. There's a traverse at the top so I'll have to do some kind of redirect while cleaning.

And I'm up. Gorgeous view. Somehow there's a serviceberry bush up here with butterflies on it. I can see an osprey nest below me by the river. And these turkey vultures floating around. Maybe they saw my LRS setup and decided to stay close.Anyway at this point I would love to rap/clean and be done with it but because of the traverse I'll have to rap, refix, clean, reclimb, and then rap again.

A
Anon04/29/26, 23:34No.260813
And I'm back on the ground. After my first rappel I realized with some alarm that my rope was only just long enough after the refix. I usually bring a 60m for this route but fortunately I had an 80m today. I should have realized when I fixed the rope at the summit right on the middle mark. I didn't bother to pull the rope so it's just good luck that I decided to knot the end of the slack line. As if anyone needed another reminder.

If you climb the kilter jug board at anything other than 50 degrees or more onerous, then you should be banned from all climbing gyms in the nation. Why is "flashing" such a big deal in the climbing world?
Why does it matter how many times you tried? Either you did it or not.
I heard a gym in a gym saying he is not feeling 100% so he is saving his flash attempt, which for me is crazy.
You are literally a meter away, just try it.

How much do you care about proper ratings at the gym? Mine here only sets vague colors. Have only been at two others, one did the same but seemed like everything way much harder. While one tried to give v grades.
Personally I don't really care. Having spoken with the staff about route setting. It seems they want to be vague to drive people to not get stuck in the mindset of "ooh I can only climb yellow, I could never climb red that's too hard."So there are blues (2/6) which are harder than yellows (3/6) at times. But also the opposite where yellows are much easier than expected. That said, I did my first red route recently which is one above yellow. Which was cool. But only because I was egged on and that was a mistake. Had to take a week off because holy shit my hands and fingers hurt after crimping above my ability.

this is retarded advice. if you want to make your fingers stronger you should start hangboarding as soon as possible. I would say 3 months in you should start doing 20mm max hangs
don't get me wrong, I am NOT a good climber and I am in search of lost time, and there are plenty of climbers who will never touch a hangboard who will always be better than me
but doing 20mm max hangs immediately is not going to do anyone any harm at all, and could make or break you ultimately somewhere along the line

weighted pull-ups has basically become the new bench press
and I think a lot of this has to do with people sensing bench press is surplus strength, and weighted pull-ups actually feeds into something primal like climbing

Recently started going to a bouldering gym near me, I don't really go often and I don't know if I'll stick around with it long term yet, but it's been fun even if I can only do the pretty basic ones. I like the ones that have some fancy footwork, but haven't gotten too far...But is there a point in which I blame rental shoes? I assume it's a technique problem, but it's weird seeing people do boulders the way I'd think I'm supposed to do it, but when I go for it my feet just instantly slide off despite watching them do that very same walk.
I assume this is more a leverage issue at my point, but I'm also just wondering at what point is it legitimately the shoe's fault.

I'm taking a break from climbing for awhile. I just cannot mentally handle the constant comparison inherent to this sport. Every time I fall I just compare myself to my friends who sent it easily. In 4 years I can only climb at a grade my friends could do in their first year (V6). Every time I try to get better, I progress so slowly, but my friends just progress fast as fuck without giving a shit. I just can't stand it any longer. I feel worthless. I feel like I'm a nobody, and that I should give up. The most fun I had in climbing was at a gym in Utah where there weren't even any graded climbs, just colored ranges. Then my mood was ruined when some dude was like, "that gym grades soft as shit brother, hardest thing in there is a V8 lol"completely sucked away all of my motivation to climb. I'll just hangboard in the meanwhile. And play volleyball.

How faggy is it to top rope outdoors instead of trad because projecting a 5.11c on top rope seems like a more productive use of my time then leading a 5.6 because I'm scared shitless. Also about to buy my first set of CAMS. thoughts? Useful for TOP ROPE ANCHORS.

Two weeks ago I switched from bouldering 1x a week to 3x and stopped lifting for now because otherwise I wouldn't be able to handle the recovery. Today I tried doing pull ups and I broke through my plateau of 8 reps straight to 12.
Thank you, bouldering. I'll always be hooked on you.

For giving slack with a GriGri - How do you do it fast? If I push my thumb onto the black while holding the breakhand, I can only give so much slack before the break hand clashes with the device (I can only give 2-3 feet of slack really fast, then I have to adjust my breakhand). So it's like I have to predict if someone needs slack. But if I mis-predict, and they suddenly take a fall, well now my break hand is really fucking far away from me.

Any recommendations on shoes? I've been wearing the old model scarpa vapor v and while I enjoy them, they aren't the best for heel hooking in my experience. While most of the shoe fits perfect, I find the heel slipping off of my foot on demanding moves like heel hooking for a top out. I mainly boulder, but have started getting into top rope/ lead, and am wondering if I should get a second pair more oriented towards that, or if I should get something to address the heel hooking issues I have while bouldering and just use the vapors for that. I mostly climb on granite. Some models I was looking into were the instinct vsr (expensive) and the evolve geshido (cheap but apparently has durability issues). Any insight is appreciated.

Back to moonboarding. I have to focus all of my energy on the 2024 set. Is anyone else having issues with it? Older sets were easier to progress on. It's always one move with a single project that just kills my forearms. Not due to crimps, but to weird positioning.

Climbing for the first time in Japan. The problems here are easily -2-3 grades where I come from. As a point of reference should I treat Japanese grading as 'where they should be'? Or just incredibly sandbagged? Anyone else care to share their experience? And yes I know grading is subjective and it doesn't matter and all that. It just helps to know where I stand when reading and discussing about climbing related stuff.

How long does it take you guys to recover from moonboard fatigue? I moonboard usually once a week, but after 6 weeks I feel like I need to take a full blown deload. This past week I felt ridiculously strong, so I moonboarded Saturday. Then I wanted to practice a sequence on Tuesday. Even though I got 9 hours of sleep for all 3 days, and only did 15 minutes of actual work on the project, the following 10 days found my fingers, back, and hamstrings (God ESPECIALLY my hammies) feel ridiculously tired. I feel like I just got hit by a truck. Haven't moonboarded in almost 2 weeks because of it.When will my body adapt to it? It's the 2024 set.

I found out 2 weeks ago Hooper's Beta made a comprehensive climber injury assessment form that is for free and nobody ever mentions it when people talk about finger injuries?
I did the assessment for my finger injury, found their video about it and followed their rehab recommendation and in 2 weeks my finger feels so much better. A lot better than in past when I was just fumbling about with recovery. I think I can get back on track within a month instead of 2-3 months it took me in the past. This is a game changer for me. I am really injury prone

My question is how much does it mess up your fingers? I play instruments and do model building/painting and fine cooking so I'd like to preserve mine as much as possible.

newfag here, i am just getting into bouldering at a dinky little subtance recovery gym near me and good god their rental shoes are bad (understandably). i want my own now.
i keep hearing conflicting ideas of what a good beginner shoe is. do i go with thick soles and neutral shape, ultimately accepting that i might outskill them? or should i accept slight discomfort so i can learn more precision footwork?
I tried out some pairs at an REI and liked the scarpa arpia V's, which downsized much more nicely compared to others. thing is, i would kind of feel consumerist for dropping 180 after only like, 3 trips.
sorry for the blog!
