Rie Tsukihiji, a pioneer in the world of women's sumo, passed away on July 23rd 2024 at the young age of 46. She was an active figure in women's sumo from the early days of the sport, when it was still called "new sumo." She was a legend, having won 11 consecutive open-weight championships starting from the first All Japan Championship in 1996.
She is 159 cm tall and weighs 150 kg. She started sumo late, after entering Takudai University, but her powerful style of wrestling made her a star on the world stage. She won a gold medal at the World Women's Sumo Championship.
Why does nobody seem to care? nothing in jap media or anywhere.

"World sumo" is merely an amateur contest. Japanese sumo is the only professional sumo, aka the only real sumo. And in professional sumo, women aren't allowed.Side note, the qt on the right is also a women's sumo champion. She married a former sumo wrestler turned sumo elder and helps run the stable.
