What to look for in a martial arts gym:
>Physically conditioned, fit participants
>Trainer with certified professional record and a training history with at least one athlete who competes successfully
>Sparring, "aliveness" in training
>At least one participant competes at amateur or professional level
>Clean facility with mats that are frequently sanitized
What to be wary of:
>Fat, physically subpar students
>Graduation fees (e.g. "pay $200 and advance to next belt extra quick!")
>No proven athletes training there
>No sparring, moves shown are choreographed (e.g. "the attacker does this, then I do this, then you do this...")
>Cult-like atmosphere
>long mandatory contracts with hefty fees for breaking

I have done some Krav Maga, Boxing, BJJ and now Muay Thai. Muay Thai and boxing are what I have enjoyed the most by far and it keeps me the most fit so I am sticking with them. I sucked at BJJ and it was expensive as fuck. Boxing is cheap and I am getting so much fucking fitter and tougher from the training.Obviously, apart from Muay Thai, a lot of traditional martial arts have been shown to be less than practical in competition (UFC and all that). I still sort of like the movement of arts like Wing Chun - it looks cool against the dummy even if a good boxer/MT fighter would knock them out quickly.Would like to try a little bit of a TMA that looked cool just for the experience.

What sort of exercise equipment would you have in your ideal martial arts home gym?
Obvious ones like a heavy bag, pull up bar, bench, kettlebells.
Any rarer interesting ones? Indian clubs. Wing Chun dummy. Iranian shield of zoorkhaneh

>know this boomer
>when he was a kid, he did combat sport martial arts like boxing and judo for a little while
>in his teens/early 20s, he started doing traditional arts
>he seems to have swallowed a lot of their mystical shit and refuses to question it
>even though he didn't do any of them for particularly long, and he hasn't practiced at any actual place of training in about 40 years or more, he still thinks he's a legend
>is overly critical and disrespectful of anything other than the arts he did when he was younger (seems like a common trait among traditional martial artists)
>thinks he's a deadly weapon - tells people he can kill them with his thumb, that type of shit
>one time we were discussing martial arts (his wish, not mine, obviously)
>the subject of kicking range and people kicking mid-air comes up
>he had done one of these arts that includes that shit
>if he had just told me that he's trained to do jumping kicks/mid-air kicks, it would have been fine
>instead he tells me, "i can fly"
>"i can fly"
What gets me is that this isn't even that unique. I've met a few boomers over the years who got swallowed up by the mysticism of traditional martial arts that were more popular between the 60s and the 80s. It's like they keep bragging to try and stay relevant in a world that's quickly forgetting about them and they refuse to join in. I realise it wouldn't be easy for them to spend years on this stuff, only to be confronted with the notion that maybe a lot of it wasn't what they were originally sold. But why do they do this? Despite what they say, they obviously care what other people think. Or they wouldn't spend so much time and energy arguing their point and bragging. Like the guy I know clearly wants to teach me, but they job he's done of presenting it has completely talked me out of it, and he can't figure out why. Even after I've told him.
Has anyone else encountered this?

I found out where my sister's rapist lives so this is my plan:1)Dress up as a delivery man then knock on the door.2)When he answers throw the fake package in his face then superman punch to blast double.3)Kneebar both legs until the toes are touching the hip. Straight ankle lock both feet until the sole of the foot is touching the calf. Calf slice both legs until the heel is touching the butt. Inside and outside heel hook both feet 360°. Lateral kneebar both legs until the foot is touching the hip.4)Kimura and americana both arms 360°. Wrist lock both wrists in multiple directions until the hand is being held on just by skin. Armbar both arms until the pinky is touching the rear delt. Bicep slice both arms until the forearm is floppy.5)Banana split and suloev stretch both legs until I hear a rip. Twister both directions until I hear a crack. Jumping knee on belly until all ribs are broken. Sprinting soccer kicks until the balls are ruptured.

>What to be wary of
>moves shown are choreographed (e.g. "the attacker does this, then I do this, then you do this...")
Is this regarding choreographed drills that are thought of as set-in-stone, like "attacker does a jab, you parry, they they cross, you parry again and then return a cross - this will always work."...? Or is it even regarding variables / what-ifs, like "attacker jabs, you can do a/b/c, or if they jab/cross, you can do x/y/z"?
I know sparring is a pressure test and sometimes the things you've learned can go out the window in the heat of the moment, but how the hell are you gonna get muscle memory (especially lower ranks) if you don't practice something a lot like a choreographed drill?
I agree that you can't be thinking that drills need to be set-in-stone, there is a counter for everything. But sometimes it's good to keep a static drill set if you want to build muscle memory.

It's funny how after enjoying aikido for the large part of my adult life, brainlets and "MA-bros" everywhere tell me im a cult and that i am being "brainwashed" into thinking about how effective it would be in a "real fight" etc. When all i wanna do is practice, get better, have fun, stay fit, become spiritually fulfilled and so much more. I've traveled in Japan training in various dojo's, I always meet the nicest people and i love my life. And i have a lot to thank aikido for. What are your thoughts on this? I share this with so many other aikidoka. The reason i write this is i wanna convey that people's reasons for training are varied. I hope i don't come across as condescending either, i respect other arts and i realize im not really "useful in a fight" which is how most people i practice with see it too. But why should we look down on ourselves? Aikido is a mirror sometimes. It detect your intent and if your intent is becoming a "fighting machine" you're gonna think it's stupid. I hope some of you understand what im trying to get at.

Recently started looking into martial arts. Around me there's a few options, listed here with the number of times I could make class:
JKA Karate, twice a week, an hour each class
BJJ Renzo Gracie lineage, Gi and Nogi two/three times a week, 45 minutes gi 45 minutes nogi offered each day for a total of 1.5 hours per day total
Yoshinkan Aikido, three times a week, one hour each class
What do y'all think I should opt for? I can only pick one.

When i look up schools and gyms that teach anything, i can never find anything that looks promising. I live near LAX practically. Ive spent the last 4 hours just looking around and I honestly dont know if what ive been looking at is even worth trying out.Anyone around Socal that can give me some recommendations?

I went to my first taekwondo class tonight and it was just really casual I guess? I don't know what I was expecting, but no one was in a uniform except the two instructors, I was easily the most fit person there, the students I saw were hitting the bags really light and sloppily with no energy, and the young kid (maybe 14) I was training with just whined the entire time about being dizzy from spin kicks. Is this normal? There's only one other place in my town so this might be it for me. I'm on a 30 day free trial so i lose nothing if I don't go back, other than being a little rude.

Almost every single altchan/imageboard I've seen doesn't have a board or a place to post about martial arts, and most martial arts forums aside from Sherdog are dead, and I can't stand using plebbit. Is there any other alternative place to discuss martial arts that's as good as here?

I live rural. The only martial arts gym within an hour of me that teaches an actual martial art is a “traditional” karate place that teaches BJJ on the weekend. Instructor is apparently a Machado black belt but I can’t find anything on him in regards to competition. Should I just bite the bullet and go for it? There's a kung fu studio nearish where I live that's very heavy on traditional methods and learning that I've wanted to go to for some time and I've finally taken the plunge. Because they try to focus on smaller class sizes, they don't take everyone who wants to sign up and you're required to pass a tryout to make sure you're a good fit for the school and the school is a good fit for you. I have a bit of prep time, no actual knowledge of kung fu needed but I do want to start exercising so I can hit the ground running. Outside of squats/pushups, is there anything else I can start doing right now?

I'm 5'3ft 130lbs. I go to an MMA place that does Striking, Wrestling, Judo and BJJ. I can only pick two to focus on. I want to pick the ones that would best allow me to defend myself. I hate that martial arts are either
>sports
or
>mcdojoI want a MA that's like, sports self-defence. For example, muay thai with proper throws and no grappling below belt or something. If you throw a dude and fall down yourself, you're penalized. Multiple opponent drills, too. Why does this always devolve either into mcdojo krav or olympic/mma memery with its own meta like "hug octagon walls"? Original boxing was boxing+wrestling and then they changed the rules.

Also what's interesting is unless you're wrestling, martial arts tend to hold back in sparring. Football or rugby guys are taught to go hard during practice, I wouldn't be surprised that a linebacker would tackle a MT guy 9/10 times in sparring. A boxer would just keep running away and a judoka would maybe lose once or twice due to sheer aggression from linebacker, then adjust. But out ON TEH STREETZ if you're an amateur linebacker you're probably gonna tackle people no problem.

I doubt it but has anyone ever tried Tai Ki Ken ? Especially paired with kyokushin karate ? If so, what do you think of it in terms of authenticity, efficiency etc ?
I'm hesitating between this (the two of them though obviously the dojo is mainly kyokushin) and a relatively softer kind of martial art, something like a good not-sloppified Silat or Bagua Zhang, not sure, the thing is I come from kickboxing (boxing before that) and I'm tired of the fitness culture and just how casual it usually seem so I want to try something maybe more traditionnal, codified etc.
But on one hand I want to keep the "realness" and the ability to be brutal that you can find in combat sport, on the other I also wish I could do forms like lata or even dancelike things, without it coming from nowhere obviously
I know that kyokushin karate is much less about kata than other forms but how much so ? What I fear is falling into a basically-kickboxing-but-in-gi, other forms of karate here are sometimes even worse due to the grip of competition and the sport aspect that karate has in France, and most of such other forms also often do baby-karate as well which is a damn near instant shit sign for me. I don't want to do it for self defence (never needed it in a lifetime of bad decisions)
The kyokushin-taikiken dojo, silat and bagua zhang are ideas that stuck out for me but I'm open to other arts if they exist there

Is there a faster board thread for actual martial arts advice? How is this general for asking actual help? Started and I'm in a month in but I'm getting destroyed (like actually) inI usually struggle against this one guy rolling but I legit have no idea how to approach him. I blink once or grab hold of something and I'm submitted in like 2 seconds. Everyone else I can sorta see where they're going to even the higher belts (although I do know they're taking it easy on me). It is also funny when a higher belt tries to go easy on you and let you take something because they're trying out an escape and you tighten that shit where it doesn't work. I hope to get to a level soon where they don't take it easy on me. It's good for both of us I guess but I'm also getting a bit prideful because damn it I wanna catch up. My weakest positions are probably guard (struggle to hold it because they end up just standing up even when I'm gripping their neck) and trying to push through their guard lol.

thinking aimlessly, but there's a lot of martial art for strong people, and even martial art for strong and fat people, but is there a martial art specifically for people who are physically weak? Though it goes a bit against the literal concept of martial art (to reinforce your body)

My BJJ gym just started doin filipino martial arts classes and I want to level myself up as fast as possible in the 2 weeks there will be before our next class. I might need to be out of town during that next class for my job and I don't wanna fall behind, and want to make sure that the professor is down to teach karambit later. Should I just buy a shitty dowel and do the singlestick drills we did in that session forever so I have them down pat or are there any good instructionals on fundamentals on youtube?

How long are your training session, anon? My last gym we did 2 hours, 3-4 times a week and it felt barely enough to not get rusty
I had to move, and in my new area theres only fitness gyms with boxing/mma/everything classes that are only 55 minutes long which bums me a great deal as I know it will be overpriced bs full of women thinking they are practicing self defense

Do you usually go to the gym the closest to your home or do you travel a bit to practice
How much is too much traveling?
I once talked to a guy who would do 2 hours of drive to go to his gym, do his stuff, then do another 2 hours of driving. 3 times a week
