The human mind processes information in 2 ways, let's call them quick and slow. Quick is reactionary, and quick learning. It's a very handy tool, however it doesn't really process the validity of information, just that it's there. It perceives everything as real. It allows you to react quick enough to dodge a falling tree, an attacking predator, close your eye before something flies into it, or to learn things such as your initial language, basic movement and facial expressions. It's very useful, however it's flaw is that it completely circumvents critical thinking and believes everything to be real as critical thinking is too slow in these situations. Slow is the thinking part of the mind, it processes information slowly but much more effectively, it plans, it validates truth vs lie, it assesses. This is excellent for long term survival and much more, such as art, mathematics, philosophy, health care, etc. however it is far too slow to react quickly and requires previous basic abilities to function as well, such as a learned language, mannerisms, body movement, facial expressions, etc.
The quick part of the mind is active at all times, for obvious reasons this is necessary for survival, the problem is that since it perceives everything as de facto "real" in order to react quickly it can easily be manipulated and lied to. The slow thinking side of the mind however is very good at shutting it down when in normal circumstances to prevent this. Except when it comes to TV, Phones, Movies, etc. these forms of interaction, and more precisely the way video works to create the illusion of movement, short-circuit the normal discernment the slow critical part of the mind has, and the quick "everything is real" part mostly takes over and begins reacting to and mimicking what it sees, the suspension of disbelief. Ever wonder why actors who play evil parts get hate mail? Why porn can make people troon out? There's way more to it but ya there ya go.
