I've been circling the drain philosophically for some time now and have, at least somewhat, accepted the possibility of Christianity. I've been attending the local Orthodox Church for a little bit now and I'm starting to feel doubtful of the whole thing. I'm not really sure how to phrase any of it, but the biggest issues to me are:
>the weird ritualisms (the bowing, kissing of the icons, etc)
>the rigid nature of the liturgy
>the obsession with "purity" in regards to heresies that just feel like a hangover from 1600 years ago.
>unironically, the stance on evolution.
I don't really know where to go from here. I prayed and the opportunity to go to the Orthodox church presented itself to me. I feel lost.

What about it? Both western and eastern church have a pretty rich diversity of rites.... on paper....

Probably stronger on Orthodoxs yeah but still it's called orthodoxy for a reason.
Ironically, they have a weaker consistency than Catholics and have a hard time at making their own councils

Catholic has rituals but they're a lot more streamlined and adapted for modern times

Catholics largely accept evolution and interpret Genesis allegoricallyPlus, RC has apostolic succession, a consistent theology and doctrine based in history, and most importantly is univeral, not broken up into a bunch of ethnochurches. You're very close and yet very far from the truth. Forget what you think you know about religion, God, and Jesus, and start thinking about religion without any prejudices. Compare different religions with a focus on the deeper truths rather than the superficial differences. Nobody will tell you the truth, I'm sorry, it's just the way it is. The spiritual teachers always used parables, metaphors, stories. Your local priest probably has no idea what he's doing. Keep praying to God that he may open your heart to understanding. The key to prayer is passion, you need to pray passionately, and timing: pray right before falling asleep or right after waking up.

The byzantine churches are the actual inheritors of constantines state religion that gets conflate with the Vatican. The schism was in actuality mostly about the HRE and the pope not recognizing constantinople as Da Twü Rome™®. By the way despite the claims otherwise there actually have been reforms to the eastern church as well. One of the theological justifications initially was in protest of the use of icons, a stance that has obviously been dropped and without dedicating too much time to giving examples there's also the Russian "old believers".

get used to unironic idolatry (not that i think idolatry is bad necessarily, I'm an atheist now)
get used to being surrounded by old widows at every mass. there were times when I went to church and I was the ONLY DUDE in the congregation (besides priest and deacon)
get used to hearing some dumb shit like "my cousin died hit by a train because he used holy bread for a good fortune ritual
get used to having your hope and positive emotions constantly shat on. they constantly tell you that you will never be good enough, that god's standard of behavior is impossible to meet, that you must never think to yourself "i am good because i believe in jesus" because that is pride and the devil makes you feel positive emotions about yourself.
you must constantly embarrass yourself by confessing to the priest on your knees (and yes he puts the poncho on your head while you kneel in front of his lap it looks like you are sucking him lol)
so basically get used to feeling like shit, like you can never be enough, you are always guilty and one second away from going to hell, and there is fuckall you can do about it.
if you like pain and hopelessness and despair ortho-christianity is for you. cheers !
