Why is it said to kill vampires? Why are there so many legends around it? And most importantly, what are its actual supernatural properties and powers?

In the old west you used to be able to melt silver coins into bullets because raw materials were scarce, and there wasn’t a lot of developed infrastructure to support a fully fledged firearms industry back then.

Silver is one of the few metals with the highest conductivity, which makes it extremely useful in electronics (applied alchemy). The device you’re using to browse 4chan right now wouldn’t work without silver.

I'm not looking it up but here is my obviously correct explanation of the vampire thing: silver was used medicinally as antibacterial to prevent infection. Vampire attacks were usually seen as the cause of illnesses in certain contexts (several member of a family die of the illness one after another for example). Clearly the capacity of silver to fight disease works on Vampires because they either are themselves afflicted or because their power is disease.
