For the most comfortable shave, I use a two-step process. I noticed that using a blade shaver hurts or tugs more if the hairs are long when shaving AND that the tugging is less when the hairs are short or just stubble length.STEP #1: I go over the daily growth with a simple cheap foil electric shaver. It uses two AA batteries and they can be rechargeable NiMH for cheap operation. I go over the growth and that leaves a low stubble. I use a Panasonic ES3831 shaver I bought 15 years ago at $14.95 and it is still working great. It doesn't need to be thick as it is used for lubrication for the bladed shaver. I use those cheap disposable 3 parallel blade shavers instead of extravagantly-priced gillette. I don't use the nasty bloody safety razer pictured in OP's post. I don't use commercial shaving cream because that is not only messy, but it is smelly. I don't like that strong odor from shaving cream. Yes, I know it works, but skin lotion has been good enough for me decade after decade.One of the advantages of using the electric shaver first is that the shorter stubble is easier and faster to shave. Another advantage is that the amount of tugging or pain from shaving is reduced a lot (for me anyways). Another advantage is that it is easier to apply lubricant for shaving and that the amount needed is less than if longer hairs are present. It's quite possible to get a bunch of shaves out of each disposable razor, so don't toss them after just one shave.

For my main electric razor I am very satisfied with Panasonic. First one was a Panasonic and it has been one ever since. Currently I am using an ES-RT67, but razor models die and change like flies and that one is already unavailable on most shopping sites. But from my experience Panasonic is always a good choice.

The way you write it's like you've now done it once, and you're surprised that you've cut yourself. I think the number one thing you have to do is just practice.The only way to get a cut is when the skin rides up into the small gap between blade and guard. You literally cannot get cut otherwise because that's where the edge is and if your skin does not go in there it can't get cut. Keep the skin taut. You're supposed to pull all sorts of stupid faces so your kids start pulling faces behind you forgetting that there's a mirror there. Those faces help pull the skin tight.What silly person told you to use a hot towel? Warm water is better than hot, and you don't need warm water, cold works too and cold actually tightens the skin. The idea of water is to weaken the keratin in the hair. Hot water increases skin irritation. Cold water may affect the way the razor glides over your skin.If the razor is yanking chances are your hairs are too long for shaving, the razor can't get to them to cut them off and it's pulling on a bunch at once. People trim their beards with shears or scissors before shaving. It's only the old straight razor that works for long beards without trimming first. You need to rinse your blade frequently too. Those old style safety razors are better than modern disposables but they clog. You to be rinsing them maybe after after stroke because they can clog with hair and skin and then they'll pull hairs really well. Another thing that causes yanking is a dull blade. Not every blade comes sharp, they should but they don't, so maybe a different brand would be better. If you thoroughly dry the blade, that means rinsing it so there's no hair or skin on it, it won't rust so fast. You don't even have to be able to see it, microscopic pitting can weaken and dull the blade. I take mine out because getting to the bottom side can be hard, and I wipe it on a towel.Like I wrote, the number one thing is practice.

Didn't expect to see a thread about this lol.I actually bought a full safety razor kit this morning, after seeing how pricey Fusion 5 blades had gotten for me and how much money I was dumping into them while they only lasted a few months, for reference, 16 blades cost about $48 when discounted.Also, I was already thinking about ditching them, since I always ended up with itchy and red skin unless i applied an Aloe after shaving cream (and sometimes i still got irritations even after using that cream).So before buying the Fusion 5s I researched for a bit and decided to get this stuff instead: a King C. Gillette Razor (apparently more forgiving for starters), a synthetic brush, a Proraso shaving soap bowl for sensitive skins and an Astra Platinum pack of 100 blades (sharp enough for coarse hair, but coated in platinum so it won't shred sensitive skins), I got all of this for about $34.

Several passes. Shave after shower or bath, so hair is easier to shave. Use proper shaving cream, or at least gel. Warm, not hot water, helps with openins your skin's pores. Make faces and pull your skin when you shave, whatever feels necessary. Your razor may have weird angles across your face. That's okay. Use cold water when rincing and cleaning your razor. What works for me is, first pass with the grain. This leaves some stubble, but is acceptable enough for work and daily activities. When I wanna shave properly, I do a second pass across the grain. Not against, but across the grain, washing with warm water and reapplying lather. You DON'T need to press your skin lile crazy. Let your razor glide across your skin. It's weight and gravity will do the rest. Go slower for the second pass across, you're liable to get nicks. When done, get a shaving stick to stop any bleeding. Use an alcohol free after shave (and shaving cream while we're at it). Wash your face with cold water, it closes the skin's pores. In other words: PRACTISE. Ypu'll save so much money long term with DE razors, plus you'll feel like a gigachad while shaving.

Using a foil shaver, I hold it horizontally for most of the shaving. But to get a closer shave, I then orient it vertically on a final pass for the stubble under my nose. That usually catches the remaining stubble and gets a closer shave.
