Ironically he's helping increase the overall throughput of those escalators: people climbing the stairs necessitate space that dramatically decrease the volume people can use to ride the escalators, hence decreasing density by a lot, while the increase in transit speed doesn't make up for the said density decrease. People being in a hurry are one of those main character syndrome things that measurably make things worse for everyone.
