auto resolve ruined total war, no strategy just stacks of units, no gameplay. It is a ruined series and always has been. It cuts out half the game and you end up doing it for one reason or another

>and you end up doing it for one reason or another yeah because fighting 10 shitstacks per turn would be just as bad

Autoresolve has been in the game from the beginning; you dumb secondary newfag. That was never the issue. The issue is that CREATIVE Assembly is CREATIVELY bankrupt like all corpos, and in their greed they fail to understand what made these games good to begin with.

Autoresolve didn't ruin Total War. Autoresolve WITH automatic unit replenishment ruined Total War. Now there is no downside to yoloing your stacks in autoresolve. The units will get replenished quickly no matter where they are.

Autoresolve worked just fine when you had bigger numbers and knew you were gonna win so an actual battle would've been a serious waste of time, and it was vastly improved between R1/M2 and E/N/S2 That's the exact purpose, no one autobattles literally everything, not even Warhammerfags

Autoresolve spam is more of a symptom of another problem Total War games have, which is that a long campaign or full map conquest is too time-consuming and tedious to properly fight every battle so once a playthrough reaches a certain point, it's easier to just auto-resolve everything since whatever losses you take from not microing can be easily replenished. Short campaigns feel better to play for this reason, even if they typically end way before getting access to any of the best units. I do agree that auto-resolve shouldn't really be a thing in Total War, since the point of the franchise has always been real-time large field battles. While this might not be everyone's cup of tea, I think Total War could actually benefit from having more scripted or linear campaigns that don't drag out as long as the traditional grand strategy map campaigns do.

You don't have to use it. Skill issue.

On top of all the issues touched on ITT you're forgetting the big one: Total War has turned into a giant stat-check. You show up with better units or you die. In the old games you could show up with lower quality units and use tactics like hammer & anvil to outperform more expensive troops but the same tactic does dick nothing in Rome 2 and onwards because of morale being effectively removed as a feature, healthbars taking the teeth out of cavalry units and surrounding the enemy being made into a useless gesture against higher quality enemy troops. And that's not even mentioning the fact that auto-resolve is 1. Completely risk-free because you can see the result before even clicking the button. 2. A victory in auto-resolve wiping out every single enemy unit every single time (further elminating the need for cavalry because you don't need cavalry to run people down if you have a wipe-out-everyone-button that is also risk-free to use)

you don't have to use it, so stop complaining

>no strategy just stacks of units you're confusing strategy with tactics, winning every single battle regardless of numbers because the AI is bad is a lot more shallow than letting the dice roll

Yeah bro I'd love to waste 10 minutes (from the tactical layer loading screen back to the strategic layer) fighting a battle of my deathstack against 3 enemy units that I know I'll win with close to nil casualties.

Nah its necessary because it can get tedious sometimes to fight a tiny army of 4 peasants and a general, just auto-resolve useless battles.

Why are you using autoresolve at all. The entire point of these games is to watch the little lines of people hit each other.

If the campaign layer didn't get boring after 15 minutes it wouldn't be a problem at all.

No multi million dollar company is ever going to make a game not targeted at causals, small fry. Go play a small studio game like fields of glory if you want something beyond that.

How to fix it? Simple: 1. Remove hitpoints. Models fight until they get a mortal wound, with the chance to get a mortal wound being dependent on various contextual factors (gear comparison, animation hitboxes, skill/eliteness comparison, sprinkle of RNG, unit type comparison, etc.), so that you can't easily blob tank and individual models can't become invincible even in the most absurd scenarios (such as routing units being chased down by cavalry, as mentioned by others) 2. Remove unit-wide automatic non-conditional replenishment. Sure, you can allow for a small trickle of replenishment of your more elite/lower number units by establishing logistics routes (possibly even behind enemy lines), etc. on the strategic layer, but being able to automatically (and for free) replenish any losses just by waiting 1 cm behind your border, or god forbid have abilities that allow the same in enemy territory, is just retarded. Yes, HOMM3-like "hero chaining" and similar logistical mechanics *should* be a fundamental and crucial part of the strategic layer if you want it to have any actual meaning in gameplay.Total War with HP and other RPG-like bullshit mechanics is only good for roguelike Slay the Spire style combat-only type games, as indie sphere has been proving for a while now, because it throws 95% of strategy out the window.
