My favourite build in EU4: Merc + Inno + Defensive + Espionage. Using this combination it's possible to get max mil advisor cost reduction (-90% so level 5 costs 2.5 ducats p/m) + signficant mil tech cost reduction so you have virtually unlimited mil points for sieges (+siege buffs from espionage) and always ahead on mil tech, also general innovativeness from inno and tech cost reduction, cheaper mercenaries with more manpower (one of most OP things in the game), stack fort defense and fort cost reduction (including other modifiers like estates, gov reforms, terrain etc.) to insane levels, alongside other group-specific mil bonuses. This build works very well with Switzerland due to their mercenary buffs, and they are one of the most OP countries in the game IMO. It's possible for each of your individual merc companies to have 200k+ manpower in reserve after unlocking every bonus.Not sure if this is widely known, I havent seen many others talk about it

I tried playing Ainu in base game (I can tell this is a mistake) and it's so annoying starting in a regency, feels even more RNG than usual. How do you even have a regency if your government is a tribal council? No estates for tribes btw. The problem is the only people who will ally me are very close to me and therefore betray me, if they don't just die to Oirat immediately. Sometimes even they also ally the wrong people. If only I could get Korea to like me it would fix some things, but I'm just too small and the expansion development is too pathetic to make me big even when I get lucky expanding into Manchuria. I'm too poor for colonies, too, since Alaska takes forever to colonize. I can kind of survive just by spamming galleys and stopping anyone from entering my islands, and I finally "succeeded" that way, but it was by getting lucky with a Japan invasion with no help in one of the runs where Oirat ate all of Manchuria immediately, and I didn't want this to just be a Japan run. Wanted to expand this the other direction.

Whenever I play Muscovy, I use the console to annex Novgorod after the first war. Meaning I get to 100 WS and fully siege down the country, then take as much as I can in the peace, but then I use the annex console command on what's left. Novgorod takes like 3 wars to annex and it stops being relevant after the first war

Just fought a war against Portugal and Spain simultaneously. Took like 11-12 years. Almost all of these casualties on my end are mercenaries because I'm formerly Genoa and I have lots of merc bonuses.I was so pissed off by the end that I manually scorched earth on every single province in Portugal.Took three Carribean islands with trade nodes on them and Ceuta in the peace deal. Forced portugal to break their alliances with Spain and England, and forced them to release Morocco so their presence in North Africa would be permadeleted. How would you design revolutions/massive upheavals in government, so that it makes sense from a player perspective but you don't have to actively opt in for them to ever happen to you? In a game that's supposed to simulate history it feels stupid that I have seen the United States form in 0% of games ever (I saw Mexico one time though while I was horde.) In real history Taungu (vassal of Ava in southeast Asia) conquers Ava, Ayutthaya, and most of the Burmese region. Then when its second ruler dies 50 years later, Ayutthaya comes back to life and eventually takes over most of the region itself, before being conquered in the mid-1700s by Burma, which itself had control over most of the region until the Europeans took over ~1800. The only times this ever happens are when it's deeply baked into the nation's prescribed events, like with Ming, but that kind of thing should really happen to any country of that size. Like, Sweden has to be handed the most babymode buffs of all time to consistently escape vassalization even though it can probably manage without any of them if it just catches Denmark at a good time. There needs to be more chaos so that things like that aren't rare. The closest thing to a real mechanic like that is personal unions, but they fire so rarely it's kind of annoying. And it also doesn't make sense that it only applies to Christian countries, as if the rest of the world didn't have family dynamics and other dynasties taking power (Persia.) I'm not sure how you actually make this work from the player viewpoint though. I would want to not always be able to stop upheaval in the country, but it would also have to happen in a way that you're still playing the game after it happens.

Discovered that "trade protectorate" is a mechanic in the game by finally being a thalassocracy. It seems not really worth it since a) if you have thalassocracy you are already swimming in money, and money is all the protectorate gives you b) it seems even harder to form a protectorate that vassalize someone, when you could just conquer that land by breathing on it Am I missing something?

Another cozy Russia game done. IMO this is basically peak Russia borders, I actually don't like pushing into Poland. But I dominated Central Asia, Mongolia, and Manchuria. I still think the Mongol client state looks better than direct annexation. Most of my foreign policy was actually dictated by the AI releasing countries. Someone released Tabriz and Soran off of Persia, so I diplo vassalized them as OPMs and got them their cores back. Lithuania went for the local noble but was later PUed by Spain. Poland challenged it, lost, and Spain released Moldavia, Wallachia, Galicia, and Ruthenia. I immediately annexed Ruthenia then diplo vassalized the rest. Galicia I integrated as soon as I could and I would eventually integrate Wallachia and transfer it to Moldavia just to free up a diplo relations slot. Bulgaria freed itself from the Ottomans, who are in total collapse. They never really got that far into Syria, no idea why. I didn't do anything beyond take Crimea off of them, and I don't think that was super devastating.I'm thinking of ending it here though, unless you guys have any cool ideas. I guess I could make a client state in Poland if you guys have any good names for it.

Was dicking around with the condotierri mechanic as I never use it and honestly it seems underrated. I'm currently trying to maintain some kind of balance of power in India while waiting for my truces to expire. After Mewar got dogpiled by me and all their neighbours Gujarat declared a conquest war with some 26k troops plus their vassals. I have better tech and a merc company with a good general I was going to disband anyways so I sent them as condotierri to do as much damage to Gujarat as possible. At this point Gujarat probably would have taken a full peace deal but instead they have bled out their entire manpower reserves at nearly no cost to myself. 10/10 gameplay would reccommend

If it's blogging time I guess I'll post my latest results. I wanted to try something in the pacific island area so I tried Cebu. I kind of wish I stayed as Cebu because I really didn't like the purple and the Malaya/Nusantara flavor seemed to assume you were Muslim. Although, Hindu doesn't have any mechanics so it's not like I really benefited by staying as it. I don't have any DLC other than what comes with the game these days. I'm approaching the point where I might stop being lazy and figure out how to get it, but not yet. My previous run played on hard mode and I didn't really like how that worked, so I attempted installing an AI difficulty mod instead. It made the AI blob more for one thing. Although I'm learning and feel like I'm better at the game than I was a month ago, this still felt like the easiest run I've ever done. Even with the mod the AI still can't use navies/transports and there are zero threats to my life in the area at any point until I've taken over the entirety of Indonesia and the only thing left to fight is Ming. Ming with the AI difficulty mod was not a joke and I took my time waiting to fight them until I had 4 levels of military tech over them, at which point they were a pushover and the main threat was their ally Korea. I'm too much of a softie to betray longtime allies for no reason, so I left Dai Viet and Vijayanagar alive even though I could definitely have conquered them to finish the mission tree and pretend-finish the Cebu achievement. Instead I focused on taking over Spain's colonies and testing out giving land to trade protectorates in Africa. But it's such a slog to move units all over the map, fighting in Africa and Spain at the same time with 600k+ force limit on both sides. After my last war ended in 1800 I didn't really feel like doing all that transport movement again so I just sat around for the last 20 years and getting called into easy wars by Italy and Japan. There was really nothing left I cared to conquer anyway.

I've had trouble winning the religious league war as protestants twice now. Allies will run off to separate far corners of the map, while the entire enemy side acts like a cohesive unit, running around and picking them off from the fog of war. If you try to move toward a stray enemy unit it will see you and leave the fort, but not so for allies. This is business as usual so I would usually babysit whatever my main ally is, but that's not possible here because there are inevitably going to be walls of forts between sections of europe and the emperor is going to be someone with a central position which the enemies will use as a base to hit and run from. Right now the idiot electors had to pick France after I converted, and then France immediately started conquering electors and I had to start the religious war as fast as possible or I'd lose the numbers advantage with a massive Poland/Lithuania probably joining just to fight me. And the biggest problem in trying to do it myself if my allies are garbage even though they significantly outnumber the enemy, is that I take a 100 prestige hit from converting and also lose emperor bonuses so I'm not really that big compared to the major armies (France and Ottomans.) Right now I'm -35 prestige because the -20 prestige event during the league war triggered twice. And it's not like I'm really that strong without emperor bonuses (Pomerania), so I can't just win battles by myself.

Thinking about it more, again I haven't done DLC, but the difficulty of a run for me has more been about the position on the map than the difficulty of the first few years. The start is never really the hard part. Countries like Sweden and Spain are easy because they have the sea at their backs. For example starting as an Italian OPM was easy because there are plenty of other small countries to eat. And even once you get big, you can only really be threatened from the north. Granada probably has a really difficult start, but if you survive the first war then you have an easy life for the rest of the game because Iberia is naturally defended. What's hard is being surrounded by multiple great powers which already built up alliances with other large countries 100-200 years into the game. The hard part of natives or Africa isn't the start, but surviving against multiple great powers. It's not too bad to survive the first 50 years as Crimea, but once 100 years pass and the Ottomans and Muscovy catch up to your borders, with Poland already starting next to you, if you don't ally one of them then you're liable to have multiple of them declare on you, and that's what allies are there to prevent. It was the same as Tibet. The first wars were relatively easy but then eventually you're surrounded by enemies. For some reason India always forms a huge hugbox of alliances and you will be the weak link if you're not allied with each other, and Ming and Oirat are there too to pounce on the opportunity.

My favorite part of playing in Italy is all the releasable tags. I love how you can expand pretty fast by taking a country’s capital then releasing a ton of OPMs that you can easily diplo vassalize

I can literally only play Anbennar. The challenge still drops off after 1500, but vanilla has zero challenge left if you try to play as any of the interesting tags. I remember trying Austria in the latest update, and you could have half of europe under your control before 1500.

Wallachia and Transylvania just kinda fell into my lap, I was able to diplo-vassalize them both. This is bad news bears for Hungary and Poland. I had intended to leave them both alone. But now, forming Romania become a goal.Decided to transfer Macedonia from Illyria to Greece. In exchange, Illyria got Slovenia. I'll be honest and say I mostly did this because I thought the border looked bad wrapping around Kosovo. Part of me wants to give it up, but the rest of me is too greedy to let the gold go. Maybe when it depletes itself.Obviously the headline is Graecia's enlargement. The Ottomans got involved in a war in India, so I was able to take a lot off of them unmolested. I got to 50% takeable WS before they started arriving in force, at which point I peaced out. I have to fight them again later, so there was no point in deathwarring. Graecia's borders were a bit of a conundrum. I had to decided between Italian aggrandizement and my own internal Grecophilia. In the end, I decided to keep Corfu, Cephalonia, and Negroponte. I always keep Corfu and Cephalonia, but Negroponte really adds to the feel that I am their overlord.France is my long-term ally, btw. Not sure if I said that yet. But that's why I haven't touched the Baleric Islands. And I'm not blobbing into Spain because I think it looks ugly. My sole focus is the eastern/central Med. Tunis has been allied to the Ottomans and Mamluks this whole game, which is why I never touched them. I fought them in the Otto war and got them to break their alliances. Tbdesu, I kinda forgot about them. I bet my truce is up and I can go gank them properly again.Anyway, the objectives now are restore Romania, liberate Bulgaria, and seize Tunisia

I took all of Tunis' coast in 1 go because I was sick of their piracy. I've actually kinda forgotten about them. Though there's not much point in finishing them off, that land is pretty useless. Anyway, then I moved onto the Ottomans, then Poland. I need to take 2 provinces off of Hungary, but they're allied to Russia which is why I did Poland first. I did just release Bulgaria after taking that land, though maybe I should've made a client state. Bulgaria kinda awkwardly fits into my plans. I know what I want to do with Greece, Illyria, and Anatolia, but I don't want to just leave the Bulgar lands in Ottoman hands, so I freed it mostly out of a kinda fait acompli.Anyway, after cleaning up the Hungarian-Dacian border, I'm just going to blitz the Ottomans and Mamluks. I think I'll take it all and turn it into TC's, unless anyone has any better ideas.
