Hoi3 should have become the universal design standard.
Along with its cousin Eu3 it was an attempt to accurately represent historical events on a grand strategic scale. Sure plenty of things sucked, but in general it did a pretty good job for a game designed to run on most home computers.
I fully expected it would lead to future refinements with plenty of fixes and improvements.
Still playing it. Current game is United Kingdom ( with its ally France and all the little bumfuck puppets ) gone wild on a world conquest.

the tech system is a mess but it's simultaneously cool to be able to upgrade every piece of equipment in your military down to a granular level, and they did a lot of research even for minor powers in terms of small arms. still would have been better off using HoI2's nation-dependent tech team system however.

what are your favourite minor/regional powers to play as? for me it's Hungary or Romania as Axis and Canada or Brazil as Allies. If you build like 2 LArm/Cav divisions as Hungary in 1936 you can pretty much singlehandedly conquer the Balkans down to Greece before gearing up for Barbarossa.

If there was a mod that starts every country at war with every other country, all with the same techs and same leadership points, and with an AI which doesn't waste IC on any infrastructure improvements, garrison units or armored units with no CA bonus, then I would play it.

War against the soviets has started and going pretty well. Germans and Italy on their way to help.
Using mainly Heavy Armour + infantry regiment x3, and armoured cars for later encirclement and breakthroughsPoland starts off with a huge army of infantry regiment x3 so its very viable to rush heavy amor, make lots of HArm brigades and attach them to each infantry division made of regiments

TLDR. Fuck this game. Defeated and retreating enemy HQ manages to destroy my Infantry division by simply existing.>Be Australia. Go it alone. No Axis. No Allies.
