I've played every major recent Paradox title, from EU4 to HoI4, Victoria 2, CK3, Stellaris. They all have aspects which are fun, a lot of it being linked to the many different paths to take.
But Victoria 3 has never hooked me. I feel like I'm just following what the screen is telling me to follow. I'm short on a particular trade good, well I just need to build a factory or import it. The journal is telling me to do something, well I better go do it. The population becomes radical if I don't become liberal.
I feel like I'm not in control. In every other Paradox game I can do what I like. If I feel like colonising as the Ottomans in EU4, I can, and I can give my own names to the colonies too. If I feel like making a dynasty and spreading it across the world then that's possible in CK3. But in Victoria 3 I don't see that same replayability. It feels very restrictive.
So how do people have fun playing this game, /vst/?

I agree with you on Victoria 3, but I also got the same impression from HOI4. The focus trees for countries give the game replayability since you can pick a different path during your next campaign, but I don't like how you're restricted to what's in the focus trees as far as what you can do, and so much of the game is tied to what happens in focus trees that you can't really avoid using them. HOI4 is a strategy game, but because of focus trees I never feel like I'm thinking up strategies for anything.

Victoria 3 limits the player way too much, everything needs some build-up or prerequisite. The most blatant effect of this design approach is how you can't even break free from being a vassal anymore until your liberty gauge increases enough. You need to increase it by getting independence agreements from other countries, demanding stuff from the overlord that's going to be rejected, retaining economic independence, damaging relations and so on and it can take a lot of in-game years before you're in a position to break free.
It's very difficult to get your own country to not be backwards as fuck law-wise without a revolution if it starts off with most of its laws like that, passing laws against the dominant parties like the landowners will inevitably attract revolutions and might not even pass in the first place without some lucky character + party combo where a guy with desirable law views takes control of the major party and suddenly the landowners vote for commercialized agriculture. Some laws also have limited time windows based on how long the party pushing them will remain in power so if you don't get enough industrialists to vote for no migration controls then you can't really get it for the rest of the game since industrialists have a tendency to be usurped by trade unions. Revolutions are also risky since nearby superpowers that are also backwards will probably help the revolution because of ideological similarities and you might as well restart.
Good luck getting most of the techs in the game without a strong start country too, let alone all of them.

In this current era of mediocrity in everything even Grand Strategy games are so lacking in challenge and are so dumbed down that one must create one's own entertainment. And what better entertainment can there be other than fantasizing you are a girl with a big cock shoved up your gaping and no doubt well lubricated asshole?
Consider the history of the typical AAR. At one time these were detailed written reports illustrated with relevant screen shots and punctuated with wry and sometimes witty comments. Then this art was lost and replaced by gibbering baboons on utube. Eventually the game element was dispensed with altogether and nowadays its just vids of guys dressed in dresses and wigs jamming foreign objects up their ass while they make faces and groan like bitches.
Its a travesty I tell you, but it is what it is.

So I've been trying to play Switzerland to learn more about how the economy works, the problem is I don't grow very fast and I keep getting Reactionary Revolts that destroy my fucking economy. I'm guessing for the latter part I just have to stop passing so many laws. Otherwise, I just build construction sectors when I have a surplus and build resource industry + tools. But it's very slow and idk if there's like supposed to be a specific order to these things. Jan 1 1836 I build 2 construction sectors then queue up all 6 logging camps in one of the states, then some tools, then iron, and then I kinda alternate btwn the three. Idk if there's supposed to be a very specific order to this but so far I haven't really succeeded in getting a good economy going.

I have about 1k hours evenly spread between HOI4 and EU4, but holy shit, after 25 hours in vic3 i understand basically nothing.
Played a few belgium tall games, sure, got rank 3, but it was very boring.
Tried playing france, for some reason one of my generals gave me like 90% offense and i instakilled prussia shattering it into 50 states and their powerbloc with it in like year one. No idea how, why or how to re-apply this elsewhere.
Tried playing prussia, and for some reason I cannot set up a frontline in denmark, because I can't ask mecklenburg for military access even though they're in my trade and power block? what?
I really enjoy the politics and trade mechanics, but I simply don't understand military at all and it makes my balls hurt. Also one more thing, any way to make states actually visible on the map? I can't understand what I'm looking at, but zooming out for paper map is too zoomed out.

It's got a ton of alternative production methods and unequal distribution of goods so you can actually leverage a strategic advantage in producing certain goods. I just finished my first GOOD game of Victoria 3. I figured out once you get to a certain point you can just turn on automatic expansion on everything and basically just sit back and watch the line go up, occasionally intervening for power and railroads. Infamy didn't matter at all near the end, I had >1000 battalions and Cut Down to Size plays were just another opportunity to annex stuff in self-defense, or liberate Ireland because I felt like it. I did go bankrupt once due to all the wars but I bounced back obviously. The thing is though, I had an absolutely fuckhuge population, and I feel like if I tried to play a lower-pop nation without doing tons of conquering it wouldn't go as well. Do you basically have to conquer to win if you start small?

GB's entire tool import (600) comes from me and they're still running a deficit (-1000) lol, with some treaties where you ban a country from accessing the world market for a certain good you can really fuck them over i think
also, i have so much trade capacity compared to the rest of the world (idk why the ai doesnt expand their trade centers much), my trade centers are buying 1.5k units of wood at ~15 pounds and selling 1k units of it for ~25 pounds, cool how trade centers automatically find opportunities to make money in trading kinda like real life

they need to add 'force subvention/tariffs' on goods in treaties or something, i built over 200 mines through investment rights into china, and like 400 trade centers, but the AI is too retarded to realize the possible gains and won't temporarily subsidize or subvent exports to get it started

Well this was pretty easy with the new patch. Focus line infantry and queue napoleonic warfare.
Build a wheat farm so your plebs don't die, ask for mil access through kabul to snipe the right state on herat. Once you got 5-6k troops you should be able to take over kunduz up north, then maimana.
Negotiate treaty with qing for transit rights and build a trade center in southern turkestan. Betray kabul and give persia the small hazaristan state you took earlier for them to help you.
Then once you fully annex kabul wait for line infantry and then kill persia for all the provinces. You can also get 2K/week for selling transit rights to the sikh empire.
