Who or what could make a proper Arcanum remake or spiritual sequel? What needs to be fixed from the original and what needs to be kept if it’s as to be inspired by the older game?

>Who or what could make a proper Arcanum remake or spiritual sequel? Sandfall, naturally.>What needs to be fixed from the original and what needs to be kept if it’s as to be inspired by the older game? Keep the ost and writing, ditch the user interface. Keep the gameplay turn-based, but make it something more like Persona 5 or Clair Obscur.

Why SHOULD it get a sequel? The setting and story aren't particularly compelling, just a lazy mashup of the real life industrial revolution + Tolkien stuff. What if the orcs worked in the factories and the elves were terrorists, that kind of stuff. It's basically like Shadowrun except steampunk rather than cyberpunk, and steampunk is not a well liked setting. People wearing top hats and aviator goggles and using steam robots, steam computers etc is just goofy. And Arcanum's gameplay was mostly terrible, so no one's nostalgic for that.

Diablo 2: Remastered graphical presentation played on controller in the Arcanum setting but it's a mmorpiguh with an open-ended plot (instead of a fixed, linear plot artificially attached to each player) that everyone knows that dragons are coming, and they will erase ALL progress of the humanoid races with incredible destruction- unless someone finds a solution before they arrive. Players like you larp as depressed union bosses in dirty towns, or as society-rejecting magicka survalists in the boonies, to the sounds of victorian-sad string instruments while doomsday approaches. Is the solution political unification? A long lost archeological secret weapon to unearth? Is there even anything you can do at all? Or should the societies of misbegotten and disenfranchised welcome the end of the world? Navigate the complex world and many factions of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and become its savoir- or be the reason it's turned to ash.

There's nothing special about the game itself. I love it, but it's not a matter of replicating it, it's about how the pieces come together. The question we need to answer is, what design philosophies and lessons can we take from it to apply to developing a modern game? Not even Cain, Boyarsky, or Moore seem to know.
