Is this a misunderstood masterpiece like Majora's Mask or is it rightfully hated for being shit?

It's basically, "What if BoF was a roguelike, complete with post-death progression systems?" Considering how prolific roguelikes are today it could be argued that DQ was ahead of it's time. (Similar, yet different, situation with FF13 and it's battle system which is basically an auto-battler, that genre has taken off these days, and in a sense it was also ahead of it's time.) Ultimately though BoF is about being a power fantasy, and while all dragon transformation systems have guardrails in place to prevent overuse... the guardrails in DQ feel bad because the inch you closer to a game over which is unlike any other game prior. Sure, DQ is built with the idea of unlocking things after deaths and even starting with better gear you banked, but was that the experience your average BoF player wanted at the time? Not really. You tack on the fact you can't even save without consuming a resource and that is just one too many smacks to the face. For BoF fans who like roguelikes it's a welcome remix of the two. To just plain BoF fans who have no interest in roguelike gameplay... I think they'd rather play BoF1 over it and that's rough man. BoF1 definitely shows it's age.

It's good. Not a masterpiece, but it's the best BoF game.

It's fine Luring enemies into a bomb trap is fun and the exploration is tense, but character movesets are way too boring, the pseudo-tactical system is wasted with fast bosses that you can't really position against, and while clobbering bosses in 1 turn with the dragon mode is very satisfying, the D-counter feels too oppressive to ever use it even occasionally I wish other developers ripped it off to try to spin it in a more traditional setting

Yes. Simple but effective story, cool mechanics that you don't see often and don't often see combined, and the art is great. It doesn't play at all like the other BoF games and the tone is also vastly different, so it's understandable to be disappointed or not interested if you're a BoF superfan. But there's no use being bootyblasted about it now.

>misunderstood masterpiece obviously yeah since right after DQ that dev team went to help develop dead rising and look how that got received, despite having very similar game structure and meta progression focus.

It's kinda both. Once you "get it" a lot clicks, but then you remember how much the game makes you effectively grind before you get it

I would be seen in a better light if it didn't carry the Breath of Fire name

It's the best game in the series by far, and an excellent RPG in general.

I bought it for 10 bucks and played for a bit but it didn't click with me. Its too different from its beloved predecessors I don't know how they couldn't have expected backlash

It's like Unlimited SaGa in that it's shit, then as you play it enough it becomes good, but if you KEEP playing it then it kinda becomes shit again because you've learned too much of how it works and can see the flaws more clearly now.
