Many modern aspects of JRPGs like symbol encounters, learning techniques mid-battle, and menu-based world map navigation can be directly attributed to SaGa. I believe it is also the only series where different races have unique growth mechanics, like monsters eating monster meat, robots gaining stats from equipment, and espers pioneering the signature stat growth of the series.I was also going to say "monsters as party members" but MT and Wizardry 4 already did that.
