I tried this in early access and never kept going past the first dungeon. I picked it up recently and it has quickly become my current favorite game. I've been playing skyrim for a decade maybe and thought if I had to hear jarl balgruuf talk about a dragon one more time I'll go insane. Let me just say this is the perfect replacement (though not a perfect game). But it is not some mere "indie skyrim clone" but its own unique thing with a lot to appreciate.
I'll start with the bad
>expected amount of jank from an indie title, nothing totally gamebreaking though
>hitboxes can be iffy, or enemies get caught on terrain
>others have reported minor questlines being broken and require reloading a save
The average
>the writing is generally fine, the Arthur lore is interesting, but has some poorer dialogue in places
>graphics aren't exactly next gen
>a few minor details are blatant ES copies like starting in a dungeon and the lockpicking minigame
>quests are not strictly linear, there's usually a couple options on how to complete them, but don't expect total freeform
>combat is not incredibly difficult, but you encounter several major difficulty spikes, but it's relatively simple to overcome those with upgrading gear
The Good
>combat is like a cross between ES games and souls games
>hits feel substantial and dodging/parrying/magic adds in a lot of combat variety
>good skills and stats system that allows various playstyles
>the maps are big without feeling like they've crammed in useless filler
>despite graphics quality the game looks great in places
>rewards for exploration and discovery, nothing feels copy/paste
>lots of crafting and upgrading systems for food, potions, armor, relics, enhancements that never feel useless
>lots of effort into making the world feel coherent and fleshed out, and some interesting lore sprinkled throughout

Especially on NG+ but also twoards the end of the NG, the ragdolls get fucking ridiculous to the point that they make gameplay annoying as chasing bodies to loot them, especially for quest stuff, sucks.

>Tainted Grail
>IndieGood one. This game is firmly AA. Letting it ride with the indie label is an intentional push made by the company so players let the jank and bugs slide.

I read somewhere that the PC can get one of their arm bitten off.

I really liked this game. Feels like it learned all the right lessons from Skyrim while improving the bad parts. I really like the music too. The expansion wasn't quite as good.

I played it some months ago but while it was fun it was jank and it was very easy to overlevel + act 3 was pretty bare bones and gave you the option to skip the plot
however youtubers have really overhyped it

it was alright for what it was but my big problem with it was it had no reason to run so fucking badly while also looking like that

I finished it few days back and was pleasantly surprised.
It's surprising there are so few open world games in this style after Skyrim success.

It's like a somehow duller sidegrade of Skyrim, dropped after 6 hours or so. Making that oversized boring fortress the first (not)town area was a terrible idea but not the only issue.I've gone from liking Skyrim and not knowing better to thinking it's just bad, then realizing it wasn't THAT bad, especially considering that (unlike Oblivion) it wasn't just a shitty version of the previous game, and that to this day nobody has made anything quite like it. But I'd never ask for more of it without major improvements that don't come alongside major tradeoffs.
Well, Avalon certainly doesn't come with any major improvements. And there are tradeoffs. And it's been a while since I played Skyrim proper so I'd probably be better off just replaying that even relatively lightly modded. Or Tamriel Rebuilt.I don't know, just feels like a nothing game. Was hoping for either something more original or significantly better execution. And better looking characters.
Outward, for example, may have been heavily flawed in terms of execution, but it was certainly unique.

its good but way too small. I play open world games by exploring the map first and ignoring all quests and I had explotred the entire map within 3 days.

What are the chances that we get a 2nd paid expansion? They've been very generous with the free updates.

I started playing it today and we have to stop putting parries in RPGs, man. I killed the guy in the tutorial and the knight outside the first castle by parrying them over and over for like 10 minutes while slowly poking them to death. You are invincible in any game that offers them to you.

looks and plays horrible. I don't know what else to say. Quickly dropped it because it felt miserable and unfun. The premise is intriguing since I love Arthurian myths but this is just bad. Indie, AA or whatever it's just an ugly piece of shit

My overwhelming feeling while playing is that it should have been a Slaine game. Swap the King Arthur button for a Warp Spasm button and you're good to go.

Same here. I seem to enjoy these single-player MMO type games like Final Fantasy XII or Dragon Age: InquisitionI'm curious though if the broken quests were reported after the recent big patch or perhaps you were reading some old reports/reviews before they made the big patch a few months ago (maybe a year by now, I can't remember)

how sandboxy it is? what I especially love about TES and always seems lacking in all the games that present themselves as TES-sucessors is that I can just fuck off into the unknown and do my own thing without having to give a shit about a main quest or story demands, and even just roleplay almost to a life-sim degree

Getting my head kicked in for half an hour by the Plaguewraith (all of his attacks 1-shot me) was worth it because the first Red Death ability that makes no attack deal more than 50% of your max HP is the most busted perk I've ever seen in a video game. The only times I've died are fighting dudes who can 1-shot, or near enough 1-shot, me.

Do you guys think the heavy performance has to do with poor optimization or is it just difficult to even get Unity to do this stuff so it's adding a big overhead to everything?

Act 3 really bogs down the whole thing, should've just made it a side area and excluded the main plot from it all together it's very bare bones

It's a good bordering on great game.
The people in this thread knocking it are either: boring, coomersonlyfans, or potato havers.
