If you're just starting FF for the very first time, I'd suggest 7. The predominate majority of western FF fans became fans because of 7 and then sprawled out from there. That doesn't mean there weren't fans of 4 or 6 first, I played 4 first myself, but 7 is what caught everyone's imaginations and affections.FF7 is also a fair bit easier and the materia system is unique.All-in-all though there is very little reason to play 1 or 2. 1 is a really dry experience by modern FF standards. 2 technically isn't even technically a Final Fantasy game and is in actuality the start of the Romancing SaGa series, and as such it's pretty out there compared to other FFs. I mean 2 is and isn't. Point is, most people don't like it, and people who do like SaGa appreciate later entries in the series much more. The job classes of 3 are better done in 5, but if you're really interested after playing 5, 3 might be worth checking out.4 is very dated, but one of my personal favorites. 6 is timeless. 5 is shockingly good and holds up well, albeit it is very goofy. 8 is weird, but worth a play. 9 is slow but worth a play if you like the stuff that came before 7 and 8. 10 is the pinnacle of classic FF in a lot of ways. Flawed, but is regarded as the last true FF by many fans.
