Why do so many people say NWN1 is better?
2 has a much better story, much more reactivity in dialogue and quest outcome, companions w/ friendships, rivalries and romances, and so on.
Compared to 2, NWN1 is just a glorified dungeon crawler
Is it just the old = better crowd?

old IS better. If it wasn’t, there wouldn’t be a huge creative void in video game franchises where all they can do is re-release old games with updated graphics because nobody has original ideas and/or the ability to write a compelling story anymore.

It looks better, it have better animations, it have 3 gorillions modules that better and longer than original campaign and dlc to it, while nvn 2 barely have any at all. I guess if you want to compare just official nvn and nvn 2 plot-vice - nvn 2 is winning there, but mostly just because of Mask of Betrayal.

NWN2's engine is liquid ass. Runs like shit to this day, it has a fucking rubber banding bug even played single player, total dogshit ally AI that interferes even when you have it turned off. MotB is good in spite of the engine it's on.

Well, if you just want build variety out of the box without the hassle of downloading dozen of mods, then yes, NWN2 is definitely the better choice, since it's based on the 3.5 rulebook

NWN2 is just kind of goofy looking and dogshit. NWN1 is a malleable, blank slate that players can customize to their liking and find a metric shit tonne of downloadable modules. It's as close to a D&D campaign as you'll get in a single & multiplayer videogame. Yes, 1 looks pretty dogshit graphically, but it's got a retro dogshitness that stands the test of time, whereas 2 was trying too hard to make people say 'wow' and just kind of falls flat because of it.

Everything in your post is about the main game content. Yeah 2's official content mogs 1's but the entire point of these games is the fanmade campaigns.
It sucks because 2 really could have been the better game but the tools suck and the whole thing is just way more jank than 1.
