Riviera looks like peak “friendship is magic” dialogue-spam snoozefest JRPG Atlusslop, which is why I’m 12 hours deep and actually having fun.
JRPGs bore me. I hate menus and I don’t grind. I don’t care about anime-trauma bonding.
So why does limited items + VN pacing + weeb aesthetics hit so good this time?
Explain. Also, recommend more JRPGS that will make me hate the genre less.

Grinding isn’t really a thing you have to do outside of super old games. It’s not really a part of the genre, it’s just memetic to it.
That’s not to say you can’t grind, but that’s really just a way for stupid people/journos/Children to still see the story when they can’t interact meaningfully with mechanics

The VN pacing is constantly moving you forward, feels like there's no downtime, dialogue is snappy and to the point. The small level design makes it feel like you never wander around aimlessly looking for the next "event trigger".
The combat makes it feel like every choice matters, if you're playing on the original or hard difficulty anyway.
It's a TIGHT game like it's characters

I haven't thought about this game in years. I had to PSP version and I loved it, I should give it a replay. It reminded me of Persona except minus everything I don't like about persona. It had tactical turnbased combat, character building scenes, light VN elements BUT without the annoying grinding or slog endless encounters and a sense of restraint when it came to dialogue (the endless WORDSWORDSWORDS of Persona gets old really fast.)

its kind of like Japan went on a crazy "cut off the fat" during the early mobile phase and that resulted in a lot of DRPGs and stuff like FF 13
It has its pros and cons, I don't think it's inherently better

I learned about this game by flipping through the official guide in a London Drugs over 20 years ago, and fell so in love with Cierra's design that I kept the game in the back of my mind ever since. I finally played it this last year and was very impressed, it's unique and engaging and I liked basically all the characters.I still have a thing for witchy girls, too.

Anon, have you tried playing 1997's "Final Fantasy 7" for the Playstation? It achieved widespread popularity and fame, even among non-JRPG fans.

Still having fun with this on me Switch. It's a great little game with tons of soul and charm. ALSO more importantly, its not piss easy like most rpgs are.I actually have to THINK and plan my fights, and I've lost quite a few times, had several game over screens (again super rare in rpgs!).I'm playing the original mode/hard option, not the unlimited 99 items easy option

I started the PSP version and that has to have been without question the most insulting tutorial I think I've ever seen in a game.

If you get the switch version play oroginal mode, and hard setting. It's tough but actually fun!
