Thank fucking god people are over rtwp now after dnd got more players some years ago. Some fags acted like this shit was better than much better games just because it was based in some pen and paper game, while bioware actually botched the system HARD. It NEVER had the feeling of turn-based DnD. It was never a "real" rpg (doesn't exist yet on pc), it never came closer to emulating actual RPGs.

That's a good thing. Combat in dnd is dogwater.
Real time allows for larger and more frequent encounters, or you end up with +20 minute slogs like in BG3.

Turn based would be better if RPGs had fewer but more unique encounters. But since RPG developers can't help themselves but to pad their games out with hundreds of mind numbing trash encounters, RTWP is better since it at least lets you get through them faster.

I love RTWP. Though (understandably) BG was a bit unwieldy at times with a six member party and not very polished control. What I like the most is that it can have both pause filled strategic battles, and when I become fatigued from that, there comes a battle where I simply issue a few commands to get my party started and then just sit back and watch the battle unfold into a satisfying conclusion.Dragon Age Origins had some welcome improvements and additions. Tinkering with the AI scripting was a fun refreshment.

BG2 has almost no "trash mobs", 90% of encounters are meaningful fights, meanwhile BG3 constantly waste your time, long and gay dice animations you cant turn off, no animation speed option, everything taking ages, mandatory voiceover and face cam in every dialogue even for irrelevant NPC who have nothing to say.

Both are useful on their own. In a combat slog real time can help not waste your time as you hack your way through a legion of mooks. Important fights you can then tackle slowly by switching to turn based. Pathfinder did it right by letting you choose.

Turn-based usually also has trash mobs but they take longer and are boring wastes of time. In RTWP trash mobs are quick and fun opportunities to mess around with your abilities. Blow those wolves up with a fireball.

Almost all turn-based systems handle fodder, frequent encounters and bigger encounters extremely poorly because the actual combat itself is too slow.
It's not that turn based by itself is slow, but how the devs implemented it.

Buff tedium is a UI issue, you don't have to make your players say I cast *blank* over and over in tabletop. They could just list out the buffs they commonly use on an index card with the casting time and say I do this.

RTwP works well if you're playing a borderline action rpgs like KotOR or DAO, where a pause is just for convenience. It starts breaking down in somewhat challenging combat when you have to press pause every fucking second.
Infinity Engine CRPGs get away with it the most because they managed to make party movement feel fluid.

There are extremely deep and complex games built around programming AI.
Some people like setting up their own scripted AI behaviors, some prefer to set up a few things for convenience and some want full control. Just because a game has programmable AI doesn't mean the combat is bad, it means it has an option players can use which is a good thing.
Many games even have items or skills which are "auto use" items of spells or default AI behavior to use items and skills.What an utterly terrible argument to use against games with programmable AI.

I remember before BG1 came out, on the old dragonplay tavern, I would get into intolerable, autistic arguments like OP's. Told them that unless BG was turn based, it wasn't a real D&D CRPG, and that the goldbox games were better. Fun times.
I ended up buying it anyway and liking it, but I still prefer ToEE.
