There is something really unnerving about this series, I can't put it into words. It's as though something really sinister is at play in this series and we aren't privy to it.

It´s not that it´s deeper but the original game actually manages to do the "tale as old as time" thing Disney was so famous for. Two friends fighting over a girl´s heart. One chooses light, the other one, darkness. At it´s core that´s all the original KH was and that naive simplicity in design was the perfect fit for Disney and what, ultimately, makes the game a timeless classic.Combat was kind of refined in KH2 but everything else became more convoluted and contrived. That´s why the rest of the games are nothing special.

It's not deep, and boy did the sequels try to prove it was by making it contrived and retconny and so many things that are also not deep.It's really fun though, not hating on it, just answering your question.

actually genuinely some neat ideas present but it got less and less cohesive as they kept pumping out sequels. at this point i'm pretty sure even the devs themselves dont fully know what the fuck any of it is actually about any more

idk it was a rly cool action game when it came out. fun gameplay, good bosses, even some good post-game type challenge ones.
personally, even when i was literally 12, i felt like it was kinda too fucking gay (its story, characters, presentation etc). but i put up with it because the underlying game was just rly solid. and there wasnt anything else rly like that (at least not with that lvl of polish)i think when demons souls/souls series came out, thats when i realized: thats kinda what i had always wanted kingdom hearts to be. an ARPG with good controls where you had to get good at physically playing it, not just lvl up. and then instead of cheesy disney and nameswapped FF characters, and a weirdo anime plot and unskippable cutscenes, you get fucking demons souls instead. a trade i was glad to make

i don't much care for KH anymore but I think [deep dive] is the coolest trailer or cinematic or secret ending of any time in video games.
