FF IX, the original Kingdom Hearts or Ni no Kuni i guess. My criteria being you don´t have to check guides or play just the right way to indulge autistic behaviors to get ultimate weapons or secret endings. You just play and have fun. It doesn´t get more relaxing and thus comfier than that.

"comfy" is a subjective term. But Skies of Arcadia and Grandia really do it for me. Dragon Quests 5, 8, and 11 are solid, as well as Final Fantasies 5, 7, and 9.The problem is that, at some point, games become "comfy" to you just because you're used to them, and not necessarily because they have a naturally-occuring aura of comfort.

RF1-2 are too clunky to be comfy, but the atmosphere is there, maybe try them first if you like the idea because you will not be able to play older games without the QoL of RF3-4

Visually chrono cross takes the cake, the peaceful music the calm parts, the light humor, cute girls...just greatBut if I could go back to the 10 to 99 hour marks on dragon quest 7 again for the first time and cruise around talking to people and just sitting on backyard couch thing, sipping coffee in the crisp fall morning again. Fuck id pay alot, I was in my mid 30s and it felt like i was 12 again sitting in the downstairs family room in my boxers again. Just pure gaming nirvana man. Took me to a better place for sure.

The latest game, and one I found comfy without the help of nostalgia, was Tales of Arise. Such a pleasant game. I'm never driven to 100% games, but with that one I just kept playing until I had done everything. The party, music, visuals, gameplay, the crafting, I enjoyed all of it.

Currently playing Jade Cocoon, it's an early PS1 title that has monster capturing. It got overshadowed by better games but it's lowkey underrated. It's comfy because it has pre-rendered backgrounds, and the story takes place in your Ainu village or whatever where you can go to several areas of the town that each have their own background. NPCs have portraits and provide a lot of dialogue, often 3 or more different ones at a time.The monster capturing and merging is simplistic but still satisfying, it's essentially free form so you can just take whatever creature you think looks coolest and then build up from there. Your character doesn't level up but still gets equipment and it's satisfying to find powerups. Chests feel like a big deal.One of the main criticisms of the game is that you have to replay its 4 levels, instead of there being 8 different ones, I recommend emulating so you can fast forward certain battle animations, otherwise the areas are honestly nice enough that it makes it worthwhile. It's peak late 90s fantasy pre-renders if you're into that.
