It's important to have the correct mindset about campaign v multiplayer. That being that a true Halo game is a campaign experience first and foremost. I would have been perfectly fine with the CE remake having firefight or some other PvE mode as its "multiplayer" offering for this reason, but it was never necessary. Halo CE/1 had multiplayer thrown in the game in the last few months of development for the same reason any multiplayer was in a console game at the time, it was just expected to be there. The campaign WAS the game, and the multiplayer was extra. Now, it did turn out to be really good and pretty addicting, but it's important to understand that this existed in mostly a party game atmosphere. Yes, there were comp tournaments, but they are not representative of the average Halo CE multiplayer session. Halo 2, or really rather Xbox Live, changed this, and set this unrealistic standard of Halo multiplayer being the face of the series. It was never meant to last, but it stuck, even as CoD 4 and onwards drained the popularity 3 years later.tl;dr Regardless of what you think about Campaign Evolved's overall quality, a PVE-only game was sorely needed at this point to correct this wrongdoing and artificial ballooning of Halo's multiplayer to be its core identity.

I'm pretty disappointed with the Gears of War: E-Day Halloween event. The PvP mode can be fun, thanks to the random weapon spawns and the whole "trick" mechanic, but once a team gets their hands on the Jack-O-Canon, the match is pretty much over. That said, I'm no PvP expert, so I can't say for sure how balanced it is. The real dealbreaker for me, though, is the Boogeyman boss fight. What a shit boss. I was already a little disappointed when he spawned and I realized he was just a Vraahk with a different skin and weapons, but I was willing to let that slide. Then the actual fight started, and I realized his AI was completely broken. I can barely even tell what moves he's supposed to have beyond occasionally firing the Torque Bow and kicking players for melee damage. I've seen him go through the animations for shooting metal spikes, only for nothing to come out or hit anything. To make matters worse, he spends about 80% of the fight targeting a squad on the other side of the map and just wandering around them. So you're either stuck going on a Scooby-Doo chase across the map or sitting around waiting for the other squad to finish him off. Activision should just use Halo 3 movement/mechanics as a base, then add sandbox items to it from other games (like Reach's grenade launcher, or Halo 2's dual-wielable needlers), and make the graphics prettier. They should keep Halo 3's art style but just make the graphics better. They don't need to go full on realism. I wouldn't even mind if they kept the 360-look such as the low poly models, but add better shadows/lighting, more detailed bump maps, etc. That way they can add other stuff like more players and bigger maps. I think Hugegrass might be too much for a vanilla Halo (it's fine as a mod), but it should be more open than Infinite's BTB maps which feel cramped. 64v64 should be fine as long as the map funnels players across it evenly and has enough vehicles for everyone so you aren't just dog-piling chokepoints. This is also where bots come in handy because you might not have enough players 2 or 3 years down the line.

Also, the issue with Hugegrass is that you have all that space that doesn't get used, but the objectives on the map also force everyone into a single chokepoint with random battles scattered throughout. The map doesn't need to be that big, I think even half the size would be much better, and have multiple objectives on the map, not just a single flag to capture. You can make an objective where there are two or three shield generators protecting a base, and the last generator is at the base. So you have players sprawled out at different areas of the map, then it climaxes into the final stand for the losing team as the approaching team closes in on them. And then you can have your crazy/epic final battle and end the match with the last generator being destroyed. Someone can probably figure out more creative objectives/gameplay than this.
