I recently rejoined chess.com and started an account from scratch. I’m typically around 2100 to 2200 elo online. But I was floored by how strong this rating range was, especially the 1300’s. Pawn value is the greatest paradox of chess. People just throw away a pawn at start, like Dutch, Smith-Morra, Evans gambits, etc. Sometimes don't even bother defending that b pawn from an eager queen and just develop instead.And yet the midgame can be completely dominated by pawn structures and pawn breaks and can utterly lock down the opponent if you have a good pawn wall. And of course the endgame can be a guaranteed win or a guaranteed loss based on just the position of a single pawn.
