It wasn't their fault, but every preview imaginable said the game was going to flop. I'm genuinely sorry, but Metroid isn't going to be successful again. Even if they did an absolute top-down purge of all their staff or the gaming industry, Metroid wouldn't be at the top of the list to get a proper, respectful reboot of the series. Blame Nu-tendo. Blame the gaming industry. Cite Prime 4 as one of the reasons why.

I replayed 1 earlier this year and it's fucking funny how Metroid managed to get a new mainline and new Prime in the same gen and still got mogged by a rerelease of something for the fucking Gamecube. I played Dread right before, too. It was fun, but it isn't as good.

Nintendo does not care. They didn't even put together an official piece of artwork for Metroid's 25th anniversary when they were going all out for Mario, Zelda, and Kirby (20th) in the years surrounding it. Funny thing is Metroid Dread is what sold the Nintendo Switch for me. So far Kirby Air Ride 2 is the only game I've felt like I'm missing out on by not owning a Switch 2, but it's not enough to drop $500. Only a new Metroid (not remake) or followup to Kid Icarus Uprising could do that. Or Sin & Punishment, but I accepted it's never coming back a long time ago.

Go for a prequel, right after Samus separated from the Federation military for a while. Throw out Other M, she essentially goes AWOL with one of the greatest pieces of technology earth has ever known, the Federation has a schism leading to the differences we see in the 2D and 3D games, separated into a regime that's human centric and hates aliens and a military remnant that integrated them politically and militarily, she has to take up genuine bounty hunting to survive hiding in Kriken space while dodging hunters the Federation hired to get her back dead or alive. Eventually some shit goes down and both sides of the Federation realize that it's better to just let bygones be bygones and keep contact with Samus while letting her do what she does best. There, Metroid was always one of Nintendo's edgy franchise, fucking lean into it also let have some bomb ass multiplayer

I wouldn't be mad about super in the dread engine. I love super, I run map randos for fun blind on my lonesome but dread was a spectacular feeling game and having that spectacular engine playing something as iconic as super metroid, but faster would be a lot of fun. A fresh, fun speedrun and something with replayability that isn't slathered in FOCUS L But nintendo only has 5 games they actually made so far and one is a manual (3rd party and 2nd party you licensed your IP to DOES NOT COUNT) so I don't think we'll hear about metroid for a generation. Tomorrow we gettin 3rd party shit and 3rd party shit only, and probably pokemon (which is also 3rd party but N owns distro)
